Have any of you guys gone with the Jim Wolf ECU upgrade for your SR?
Is it worth the money or is more worth while to get your ECU tunned locally?
Thanks,
Marc

I will be sending my ecu out to scott @ enthalpy next week. He has graphs showing his tunes beat Jim Wolf’s tunes by as much as 30-40hp. I would reccomend sending it to scott… hes done hundreds of sr20/ka tunes.
how much does he charge compared to JWT?
…and where exactly is this? i might be interested in getting mine properly tuned.
Here’s the website… http://www.rs-enthalpy.com/

Another recurring thread.
There was a big argument on some other forum about whos better JWT or Enthalpy.
People that had both dynoed up to 40 hp more with enthalpy tunes, compared to the same mod JWT tunes. JWT supporters claiming he had to make it safe/conservative for daily driving. Yet there was no issues with any of the enthalpy tunes.
Also, enthalpy customer service is much better, unless you can actually go to Jim Wolf personally. (isnt it more expensive for jwt as well, esp for re-flashes)
If you are looking for a super lame OEM+ tune - go with a JWT tune.
Otherwise, everyone ive heard of that went with enthalpy was very satisfied.
edit: njd07 mentions this discrepancy agressiveness of tune as well, missed it the first time around
From his site:
what the supporting mods on the car for that dyno graph
I have also read somewhere (cant remember if its here or some other forum) that a person sent in their ECU to get it tuned, and what they recieved was a S14 (their model) but automatic ECU. JWT claimed that it does the same thing but apparently it didnt. The main question is: is Enthalpy safe for everyday driving?
the who’s safe story is SUCH BULLSHIT i cant believe you guys are going on that.
The tune will only be as safe as the drivers foot. IF enthalpy is making more power than JIM Wolf than that means he’s running leaner or more timing and vice versa for JIM.
Either way in off boost and cruusing you should be near 14.7:1 afr and under load no leaner than 12.5:1. so im pretty sure both of these guys know this.
ok ok ok…
i HAVE an RS enthalpy ECU in my car…
however the car was not tuned properly afterwards before i took it off the road.
it is true that the Enthalpy ECU made more HP but that was comparing a generic JWT versus a Enthalpy tune for that specific car.
or in other words. if you take your car to Scott he can tune it better than a JWT generic program.
even scotts mail order tunes will not be as good as if you took your car to him.
Mail order ECU’s have to have an element of consveratism because engines vary for a variety of reasons.
that said, JWT has always ignored the 240sx market whereas Scott Avoy is a champion of the 240sx with loads and loads of experience tuning them and is active in the 240sx community.
also…
do not buy a used ECU unless you know what you are doing.
i had a guy on Zilvia.net try to sell me a stock ECU as a JWT ecu but i could tell from the pics that is wasnt a genuine one.
this is what an RS enthalpy ECU looks like on the inside:
he uses windbond chips
this is what a JWT ECU looks like:
this is what the stock ECU looks like that the guy tried to sell me… in fact this may or may not be a stock ECU, it may even be incomplete, i havent cracked a stock ECU open to look.
all mail order ECU’s are about $500 usd plus core.
there is a guy who advertises on ebay that is cheaper that can do the same thing.
How do u find the Enthalpy ECU Bing/ anyone else who is using one… ?

I don’t have a enthalpy tuned ecu but if I had to choose it would be enthalpy hands down. From everything I have read in the past years from reading FA advanced, he is very very knowledgeable and has tuned and built hundreds of high powered SR’s. His turn around time is very fast compared to JWT, he actually next days airs the ecu back. He helps you if you have any problems and his reflashes are cheap and he sends you the rom chip to install yourself and only asks that you send your old chip back, this is so you have no down time.
Awsome thanks. Ill post some numbers and results once everything is installed.

how does JWT/Enthalpy do it… I mean… how good can your tune be without the car on a dyno?
each car is different, I’m sure they’re good, but could be better?
I think ppl are confused that they can simply send an ECU out and have it returned with a program that is going to be PERFECT for their car. That isnt the case here. You will get a program that matches your parts on your car but that doesnt mean its going to run ideally. I really recommend running a SAFC and wideband with a tuned ecu so you can fix some of the inconsitencies in the tunes.
Case in point, Sent my ECU to JWT and after reinstallation the car ran DEAD LEAN. Contacted them and after some logs of my car that I sent to them, they sent me a new chip. Its better but still not perfect. Since Ive got the SAFC, I plan on correcting some of the problems with the new tune.
One of the reasons I think the map is off is my HKS intake positions the Z32 MAF significantly closer to the turbo inlet and causing a higher air count then normal. Just another difference that a mail order rom tune cant pickup.
