First, I hit up BestBuy to find a DC18. They had the floor model ONLY which they’d sell me for the outlet pricing online. No thanks, I don’t want your used vacuum that you’ve put pennies through over and over…
I stopped over at Sears for a little Hands On with Dyson and all the bunch. Dysons are nice, have great power, and seem easy enough to use… but OUCH, the price! $500+ = WHOA! I even found a NIB DC18 and it was $400! Sorry, I need more functionality for that type of price, regardless of power (oh wait, it has only decent suction according to reviews.)
I looked at a high rated Kenmore Progressive 36932 Bagless and it was pretty nice as well, and was only $279. The guy also mentioned a $70 5-year warranty addition which allows me to bring it in once a year for maintenance and such. 3-years of accidental damage to anything on the unit and after that… just defects and motor issues covered.
It was quiet, and had a lot of features. Definitely not HEAVY like the Bissell Healthy Home which I also tried out! HOLY CRAP was that thing heavy and LOUD. Top rated for suction and cleaning power, but you better be a weight lifter and live out in the woods, so you don’t upset your neighbors!
I looked at a few others that were cheaper and they all were meh.
I came back home to check the Progressive 36932 reviews and it really is a decent vacuum according to people as well.
Another that I didn’t get a chance to be hands-on with is the Eureka SmartVac 4870GZ. Apparently for $150 it is a decent vacuum. Half the price of the Kenmore, so I think it deserves my time in finding it and checking it out. It is a BAGGED vacuum though, so I’m skeptical on even looking. “I’m sorry, that vacuum is discontinued… your bags now cost $20 each” does not sound nice to me for future conversations.
I saw “tried one in store”, which really doesn’t mean much. And your “well the hose isn’t heavy enough, it’s going to kink” definitely does not happen.
:gotme: I have http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ON6H82 This one.
I bought it in October on a 50% off sale for $75 shipped. It worked great the first and only time I used it, and my gf hasn’t had any complaints since :gotme:
Actually no. You stick the canister 1/4 into the garbage can…you release the lever and give it a quick shake to get any clumps out. You act like there is a big mushroom cloud… not like that at all. All the dust stays in the bag you empty it in.
The hose does not kink at all and ive had had any lose of action at all.
The problem with other vacuumsOther vacuums have bags and filters that are designed to trap dust and dirt while letting the air out through millions of tiny holes. What actually happens is the holes fill with dirt, choking airflow and causing the vacuum to lose suction.
Dyson vacuums work differently
Root Cyclone™ technology spins the air at incredibly high speeds, causing the dust and dirt to be flung to the bottom of the bin. The airflow remains unobstructed no matter how much you pick up which is why a Dyson vacuum doesn’t lose suction.
I ended up buying a Kenmore Progressive vacuum. It was 279 and tax at sears. It is the bagless one, which is rated number 2 by Consumer Reports, behind the bagged version.
They had a sale on the version with the 5 foot longer cord for the same price. Score.
I haven’t used it yet as I’m at dinner on my blackberry.
Easy to assemble, required only one screw to attach the handle. I’ll get a review up when it warms up. It was in the trunk for 2 hours, so I want it to get to room temp before I turn it on
