okay k20… now your just being an idiot. you act like you know anything about everything under the sun. you apparently know nothing outside of honda and a few other manufacturers. please refrain from making bogus comments and misinformation. not trying to be a dick, but you are talking out of your ass. :nono :sleep
I’ve had experience with a few VW’s and they blew dick…ok maybe a bad impression, my dad’s been a mechanic for over 30 years and said VW’s suck bc when they break its expensive and a pain in the balls to work on. This leaves the impression in my eyes that they suck. ok? good. say what you want…
I have a domestic car, i have a top of the line cam, Lingenfelter, in my trans am…around $275…top of the line cams for my civic…$2200 Toda…look it up if you think thats bullshit
yah…but your GTA has been around since 87, and that motor is nearly universal with the LT1’s and the LS1’s…hell, even ls2’s and ls6’s have parts that will bolt up to that motor
i disagree entirely when you say that a volkswagen is expensive to repair. i have been wrenching on all kinds of cars, and let me tell you, my most recent job is a complete suspension overhaul/ clutch on a 93 civic ex. i needed to go to the stealer for a few dealer only items. one was the bolt that fastened the rear upper control arm to the body. this bolt was a ridiculous $5.73!!! at the vw dealer a comparable bolt would have been half of that. mind you this bolt is nothing special outside of being grade 10, which is a BFD. i can go to douglas industrial and pick one up for under a buck.
while honda has a huge plethora of aftermarket parts, they are not always the cheapest. the cheapest def. does not go hand in hand with the best quality, especially in the aftermarket world. i can say that IMO this car is over engineered in some pretty funny ways as well. i could go on all day, but i won’t. not to mention the community that evolves around vw. if you wrench on vw’s you know how resourceful, kind, and friendly vw enthusiasts generally are. what i’ve seen on some honda forums, and from some honda owners is a “better than you” type of attitude. i don’t think they are all like that, but just like your opinion basing on what you’ve seen with vw’s, i’m basing my feelings on what i’ve seen. most domestic cars seem a little more mod friendly, mainly because we are in the u.s.a. but i’m sure just like anything else the parts can get pricey. anything ls is pretty damn common, and with the ls1 being such a popular swap now, stuff just keeps getting cheaper.
as far as vw’s durability, they are very stout. there are some cars that i know of personally that have been beaten and handle it all. a buddy of mine has an '89 8v golf that has had a blown clutch in it for months now.
guess what? it still drives. he’ll take the car off a curb on 2 wheels to get around traffic. he’ll drive down the street just letting it bang off the limiter. he ran it on freakin winterforces all year round. this car is pummeled, but handles it beautifully. i can basically get an entire 8v engine and transmission for free, and throw it in during a nice day. you don’t even need an engine hoist if you are ghetto to put one in. the entire front end can be removed in like less than 30 minutes. thats how easy it is.
i’ll tell you what. when i’m done working on this civic i will report back and tell you which car is easier to work on. a good comparison is the mk2 chassis vw. the mk2 was in production until '92, and this civic is a '93 so they should exhibit similar technology as far as they’re construction. i can tell you from working on many vw’s i already know what the answer is.
:thumb on the huge write up, all you needed to say is VW’s are awesome and i would have been set, because that’s how much i care…you may catch me driving a german car in a few years who knows :ponder
I can easily say that the feel of driving a VW is FARRR better than any Honda I’ve been in. *And don’t say your Honda is any different because it pretty much is “seen one, seen 'em all” with EG’s.
My examples are some MkIII’s, an MkIV GLI, and a new R32. The only honda I felt true quality in is an S2000. And Vlad’s CRX**.
denotes 'don’t take this personally, or offensive.
** - denotes j/k.
no, i don’t think the clutch/ flywheel is a big deal, although i am doing it outside on the grass in the winter. the bigger of the jobs is the suspension. i am replacing everything, mostly all urethane, adjustable ruca’s, adj. ball joints, etc. the kid i’m doing the job for bought an energy total kit, shocks/ springs, plus whatever extra pieces he needed. again, this is on my lawn in the winter weather.
k20, you must care at least a little to put up 2 posts back to back, and say that we may see you in a german car eventually. i wasn’t trying to be an arrogant prick, and i’m sorry if i came off that way. i was just looking for the facts to back up just saying all vw’s suck.
cossey, i’d have to agree. i’m not a honda guy, but the s2000 is a pretty cool piece of machinery. i’m hoping this civic i’m working on will handle good. only time will tell. my mk2 vr6 is fun. just listening to the exhaust is a treat. :tong
