k7 Gsxr 600 stator problem ?

Okay so i have never worked on a bike and don’t really know how different it is from a car but here are my symptoms and from what i gather i have a stator issue. let me know if you agree or have any experience / advice about it.

bike is a 2007 gsxr 600 with 6000 miles, has no mods except license plate led light but otherwise nothing. I was riding it the other day ( friday ) and dropped my gf off at work. went to start the bike again and it wouldn’t start. I figured a dead battery so i pushed it up a slight grade and let it coast down and got it to pop start and everything was fine on my way home. went to nappa and had them check the battery and they said there was a dead cell in it and it is no good.

went to griffens and bought a battery and installed it yesterday and everything was fine, bike started right up and i rode down to tulip fest. left it parked for about an hour and a half down there and when i came back it started right up again. Except on the way home from tulip fest on the highway i was riding and all of a sudden the tack goes dead and the bike has no power ( traveling at about 70 ) so i down shift one and let the clutch out and it pop starts again which i thought was weird but whatever ill figure it out when i get home.

I get off the highway and onto central ave and as im riding down central ave at about 35 the tach goes dead again and the bike wont start again. i go to pop start it while im rolling and it doesn’t start. its fully dead on central ave. i called griffens and they said it is most likely a stator and another friend said the same thing. i try to start it again and get the standard dead battery noise ( loud tick tick tick a bunch of times ) and the lights will flash on the dash and then turn off.

how hard is one to replace? they are expensive as hell at 275 quote from griffens, does this sound like the issue? why would it die at 6k miles ?

Check main fuse , and also ign switch . Both are common on these bikes

If it is stator there not bad to do

Sounds like a stator issue, but like meatpaws said check fuses first…but it also sounds like it could be a bad ground.

update:

just went over to a friends house to pick the bike up and take a look at it/ see if i could get it to work and it started up fine… drove it home about 5 min away from his house everything seemed fine and when i got home i turned the bike off and it wouldnt restart. did some more research and it could be a bad regulator / recipricator which is a common fault on a lot of r6’s.

let it sit a bit again and went to start it again and it started, let it run for 15 seconds turned it off and went to turn it on again and it wouldnt fire up again.

Not a mechanic, was going to suggest the rectifier / regulator, if you ruled out fuse / switch issue. If rectifier is a-ok, then could be stator, you can run a test per the service manual.

stator or rectifier is bad

rectifier is shot dude. i had the same problem. call the Suzuki dealer, there is a recall and you may be covered.

thanks for the help guys, i went ahead and started taking the bike apart and pulled the rectifier out and man what a pain in the ass that was, about 1.5 hours to just pull the thing out. ( my first time working on a bike )

so i will call a suzuki dealer tomorow, i already spoke to griffens which i thought was a suzuki dealer but they made no mention of it, maybe ill call them again and bring up that particular issue or i could call seymours ?

in any case i pulled it out and unplugged it, bike is in parts in my garage and i just need to get a new unit hopefully its not too far out so i can get riding soon again, and i might have CNC do some exhaust work for me. sent krazy kid a pm the other day.

griffins told me mine wasnt bad either when i mentioned the issue i had. i took it out and it was cracked and smelt burnt… you tell me??

Another update:

Took the bike apart and called griffens in regards to any recalls and they said there are none but I have a warranty on the bike and can get the stuff fixed lol. Took forever to take apart and I just put it back together an i have them do what we it takes to fix.

Wasted about 3 hours of my life and some knuckles.

Updates?

griffens didnt have space until two weeks away and seymours did so i took it there early last week.

finally after a week of siting at their shop and them charging my battery they saw the low idle and and the battery getting drawn dead when riding / running the bike. turns out it was the regulator / rectifier ? common problem. it will be a week before they get the part in which sucks.

i also had an oil leak of some sort which will be taken care of by the warranty but apparently my fi light that flashes once in a while is caused by my exhaust flap actuator which occasionally gets stuck ? that is not covered under warranty because its something that needs service.

so next week tuesday im guessing is when i will have it back

9 times out of 10, it is the rectifier and usually there are visible signs that it is bad. At least that is a minor issue.
