If you are looking for some place to drive on a Sunday afternoon, Kentuck Knob is pretty cool. It’s a Frank Lloyd Wright house, like Falling Water, on 40 east of Uniontown.
The house was designed for the Hagan’s, as in Hagan ice cream, in the 50’s. A british land developer bought the place in 1986 and opened it up for tours in 1996. My wife and I drove there on Sunday. 40 is a nice drive and it was something different to do.
Thanks for the post, Now I can tell the G/F that I want to go visit these places.
It will seem like we are doing something for her but, really it will be so I can spend time with my car.
The design of this one is not as extreme as Fallingwater, but you won’t be disappointed. Some cool things, like he designed a radiant heat system that’s still in the floor and working perfectly.
The drive is a bonus. It’s worth it for the summit after Hopwood alone.
My father-in-law does Kentuck Knob’s books. They live on Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road before you get to Kentuck Knob.
I want to get pics of my car in front of it but I don’t know any photographers.
I was married at the Summit Inn. Nice place. Really pretty up there.
It’s fun to scream up the summit and try to get past everyone right after the look out before the Summit Inn and back in to the right lane in time for the road to go single lane.
Be careful on 119 leading up to the summit drive, though. State boys love the 55mph speed limit. They hide… and it’s a friggen multi-lane interstate-like divided highway. Go figure.
If you’ve got a 4 wheeler or love to hike, hit up Pine Knob. It’s essentially the ridge of the range that the summit road Rte. 40 climbs up from Hopwood. you can access it via 4wd from an access road off the road that goes to Laurel Caverns. On a clear day you can see the tips of downtown Pittsburgh skyline.
forgot to mention that the Kentuck Knob house cost $60k brand new.
Kentuck knob is awesome. the sculpture garden is pretty sweet. they even have a big ass chunk of the berlin wall sitting on the lawn. I got a nice private tour by the director. I will be working as a volunteer at fallingwater this summer doing some landscaping.
Good info. I forgot how much cool stuff is out that way. Fort Necessity, Braddock’s grave, Laurel Caverns, Fallingwater, Ohiopyle…
That would be a cool place for a photo shoot. Right in front where the house and carport meet would be nice. You can probably find a photographer on here somewhere.
i was just going to say that. the area seems to be the place for mr. wright.
i guess growing up in this area i have tended to take some of these wonders for granted.
if you take rt. 40 up to kentuck knob to see the house, the ohiopyle road is a great drive from the rt. 40 direction. once there, head to falling water, then you can take some more back roads, keep shooting across the mountain to indian head, towards 7 springs and into acme/mt. pleasant twp. to see the wright house they just moved from illinos. great driving.
i remember having a prom at the summit inn. as i recall they were rather snooty there.
and glisans is a great place to eat, as is pappys and thier wings on rt. 40 in hopwood.
fallingwater is attracting some major star power as of late:
