Laptop comparison, help please

so this girl I know is buying a new $500 laptop, I figured I would channel the collective knowledge of nyspeed to help her pick the best one.

the choices are here:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+-+Inspiron+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Pentium%26%23174%3B+Processor+/+14"+Display+/+4GB+Memory+/+500GB+Hard+Drive+-+Mars+Black/1287179.p?id=1218247184996&skuId=1287179

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Satellite+Laptop+/+AMD+Turion%26%23153%3B+II+Processor+/+14"+Display+/+4GB+Memory+/+500GB+Hard+Drive+-+Helios+Gray/1269043.p?id=1218248182225&skuId=1269043

which would you pick if it was your decision? and no chance of her going any higher as she is a total cheapskate.
Is there possibly a 3rd option < or = $500 that shes overlooking?
is newegg or one of those sites a better deal than bestbuy?

thanks nyspeed

Out of those two, the Toshiba hands down. The Dell is a 2.0Ghz P4, which is absolute junk.

I’d pick neither of those.

I’d go with this one… even though I don’t really like Lenovo. I hate Toshiba more and that Dell is overpriced…

Core I3 FTW.

That i3 Lenovo is a far superior notebook to both…

Seems like a good choice. HP has a similar model for $500

Anything with a P4 processor needs to be off the shelf 2 years ago. Memory can more than likely be bumped up if needed down the road. The 5400RPM drives are a bit of a downer though. $500 really isn’t a whole lot on a “future proof” <—Notice the quotations, laptop. I’d rather drop $800-1200 and get something that is going to last me down the road and not spare performance. Also do not get netbooks. They may be cute, funny, silly but they hardware sucks ass, no optical drive, and just too small. Also just FYI, any piece of machinery with Windows 7 Starter needs to be avoided. It’s a useless OS and it baffles me on why it was even released.

thanks for all the advice everyone, got her to buy the lenovo one.

she will only use this for school, web surfing and some streaming video maybe. just didnt want her to buy junk
