Laptop Users Post Here!

Hello, I am in a search to find what laptop to buy this Black Friday. There is a couple of brands that I am interested in and would like to ask Shift518 member that use laptops the following.

  1. Which brand is your laptop?
  2. Any problems with it?
  3. Intel or AMD
  4. Hrs of battery life?
  5. Would you recommend this brand to your family, friends?
    Thats it  !!!

:+1 i am also on a hunt for a laptop on Black Friday…mostly for inside my car but besides that post them up!

  1. HP
  2. After over 2 yrs, the battery shit the bed.
  3. Intel Centrino.
  4. Read #2.
  5. My family only buys HP.

HP
6 months (cd-rom drive is toast)
amd turion64
battery life is decent
go get an ibook
(this is my gfs laptop)

Here are prices for laptops that are going to be available during Black Friday:
<>BestBuy
Sony Intel $399
HP AMD $449

<>CompUSA
HP 14.1 AMD $499
HP 17 AMD $449

<>Staples
Compaq 15.1 $350*

<>CircuitCity
Compaq intel $299*
Toshiba AMD $399*

*Prices after rebates (not sure about Staples because it didn’t clearly specify if the there is a mir or not) BestBuy and CompUSA = instant savings. I’ll probably be getting the HP 14.1" AMD Athlon 64 X2 DualCore from CompUSA for $499, its the most expensive out of all the laptops that are on a good sale but I think its worth the money.

  1. Macbook, upgraded memory and Ram
  2. Nada, after 18 months of none stop use and abuse
  3. Intel core duo
  4. Depends what your doing with it but if you dim the monitor, turn off the speakers and run only the required programs you can probably squeeze 5-6 hours out of a full charge, on the flip side if you have the screen full bright, audio going and downloading/watching videos you can eat up a fully charge in about 1-2 hours
  5. Absolutely, I was previously a PC owner/user and this was my first mac and my only regret was not making the switch sooner.

Being that i work with computers at both my jobs and have been doing it for 15+ years now let me offer some basic advice.

All laptops at retail stores are going to be running vista. I would highly recommend at least 1gb of memory, more is obviously better. Stick with name brands, one brand i would stay away from is Acer, i’ve seen nothing but trouble with them. HP, Sony, and Toshiba’s are probably my favs. If you can get the warranty on it, GET IT. Most places offer accidental warranties now, which is very worth the extra 100 bucks or so. Some warranties will replace cover the battery for you, check with the reseller. And remember software is never covered under warranty, so if you get a virus and fuck up your system dont expect it to be fixed for free…so keep your virus/spyware protection up to date and stay off kazaa, limewire, etc.

Battery life on laptops given the same specs is going to be about the same, dont expect hours and hours of life out of a battery, the harder you use it the fast you drain it(common sense right?). You’re lucky to get 2 hours on full charge, if you’re using it like a normal person. I personally go for intel chips over AMD, but theres nothing wrong with AMD. I’ve just always owned intel chipsets.

  1. Toshiba
  2. Just slows down after putting all the crap on it, gotta keep cleaning it up
  3. Intel
  4. 2 to 3 under normal operation
  5. You’re the one who told me to go with Toshiba

Yep the extra warranty is def. worth it, I can’t wait for mine to break before it runs out in 1.5 years and get a new one w00t.

Yea, I kno toshiba is very good but I don’t want to spend that much money. I’d rather get a faster/smaller HP. I stopped by BestBuy today and checked out the 14.1" HP Pavilion and I really like it (except for the pad buttons, but I guess I can live with it), the size is perfect for what I need :). And yes, I’ll be getting a warranty on this laptop, I don’t want it to shit out on me like the last one did :)… Stupid BIOS :frowning:

Well, couldn’t get any BF2007 deals :(. So I went on Newegg and bought me an Asus EeePC. I think it might be just what I was looking for

What are you going to do with 4gigs of hard drive? Most Mp3 players have more then that.

:crackup :+1

I have a Dell Latitude D610, loaded for sale…pm me or im me @ bennyrizz if you’re interested, price would be around $500

oh, and it’s a factory refurb, like new, with protective plastic over everything…basically brand new from dell.
