lein on a car

i don’t want my focus anymore and my brother wants it does anyone know if i can transfer the lein or something to that effect

"Can I transfer a title certificate that has a lien listed?

You can transfer the title certificate and give the new owner the original proof that any lien listed on the title certificate was satisfied. Keep a copy of the proof for your records. When the new owner applies for a registration and title certificate, DMV receives the title certificate and the proof that the lien is satisfied. When the DMV processes the title certificate of the new owner, the lien is removed. If the new owner does not provide the original proof that the lien is satisfied, the lienholder is listed on the title certificate of the new owner."

Another words. If its paid off, the bank can give you a letter saying so, your brother can take that letter and get it registered under his name with a clear title.

If its not paid off, the title still has a lien on. When he registers it it will still show the lien. The payments must still be made,or they will repo the car from your brother.

We have a few DMV employees here that might chime in.

KK hit the nail on the head. But I think he’s talking about having his brother take over payments. If that’s the case i’d contact the lending institution.

Yeah if the bro wants to take over payments, contact the bank FIRST. I assume a credit check and all that must pass prior to handing over the title to the new owner/lender’s account.

if you want out of the car, and your brother wants it. it’s just like selling the car to someone off the street except you can sell it to him for what you owe on it.

or if your brother has shit credit and you don’t mind taking a HUGE leap of faith in staying on the loan but making him pay for it, don’t worry about it, just make sure he is insuring the car under his own name if he is driving it.

me personally. i would never sell a car of mine to a family member
