not looking to spend a tone of money but wondering if any one has used one. brand, weight, what size cable it had. i no that warn is among the best but expensive. any advice on off brands or even a used one u know of would be great.
check harbor freight. theyre not the best, but good enough for occasional use.
I bought a brand new 8000# Mile Marker with 100’ of 5/16" cable and a roller fairlead on sale for $389. It’s by far not the best winch out there, but it works great for what I’m doing. Keep an eye on the Jeep catalogs like Quadratec or Essentials, they regularly have sales.
are u using that on ur jeep or something else. i ask because i think my full size chevy is a bit heavier soo i just want something that will pull it.
Yeah, it’s on my Jeep. It only weighs about 2500 lbs. It’s usually recommended that you get a winch rated at 1.5 times your vehicle weight so the 8000 is really big for my Jeep.
 good point, you want to at least get 1.5 times the weight of the vehicle. I have a 3000lbs winch on my 600lbs 4-wheeler which is more than enough. Also look into synthetic rope instead of cable. Its safer, roughly 1/6th the weight, plus it floats in water.
is that rope as strong ive seen alot of tow straps break and im yet to see a cable break
yes the synthetic rope is strong. I have Amsteel Blue 3/16" in my winch and its rated for 5400lbs where as 3/16" cable was rated for 4,200lbs. Do some searching on the net for more info.
Here is a chart from one site that gives some comparison.

Edit: Warn has a 9000lbs rock crawling winch they call the 9.0RC, it uses synthetic rope
