and oddly, there are some major restrictions on Cable/DSL near airports these days. No Verizon, no Roadrunner. I’m not sure where else to look. I’m now calling businesses around where my shop is to see what they’re using.
Dammit.

There is always Wild Blue. Its through a dish. You don’t hear much about it around here because for the same money you can get Roadrunner which is faster. But if Roadrunner isn’t available to you, or Verizon for that matter, this might be another option.
Go to www.dishnetwork.com and look under the high speed internet tab.
I’m a certified installer for Wild Blue if you have any other questions.
More info on these airport restrictions? I’ve never heard of that before and searching google finds me nothing. I mean hell, there is broadband available IN THE AIRPORT so why restrict it from the neighbors?

not shitting on your product, but ive used sat internet before in a very open area, hell it was the highest tier business package available, and the service was crap.
edit: its not for everyone, but you could pick up a wireless aircard from a cell provider and go that route. both verizon and sprint have highspeed EVDO coverage in the area. (i know vzw is rev a, i’m not positive on sprint. Rev A is faster stuff…)

Wild Blue’s highest packages are faster then DSL. This isn’t Starband. This is newer technology.
I know our highest tier business package is slower then the lowest level residential package. Why? I dunno. Just is.

this was through directwave (directway? i dunno)
Yeah directway. That was Direct TV’s old internet. I think they deal with Wild Blue now too.

No they are HughesNet now. I see the commercial like 50 times a day.
I used to work IT for the Airport Towers which is directly across the street from the Rochester airport and we had business class road runner for the whole building… So Im not sure why you cant get cable.

Hmmm. Yeah your right. I have found someone using DTV’s cable doing the Wild Blue installs in this area. I just assumed DTV was doing them too. Maybe one of their subcontractors.
And like Howie put, any sat internet is going to suck really bad if your attempting to do any online gaming with it.

Because most of us are from Buffalo…and he is referring to the Buffalo Airport area not the Rochester airport
Yes I know Mr smiley face. I dont see why there would be a special “restriction” near the buffalo airport and not another airport.

not so much an issue, as it’s for my shop.
However, the suggestions are welcomed! I’ll look into the rest of the options. Laptop wireless card isn’t a bad one, however, I wanted to be able to offer wireless to my customers as well. Still, will do some more research.
Offering wireless to your customers, while a nice idea, come with a large volume of bullshit that you, as a small business owner, most likely dont want to deal with.
Leaving the wireless open is just inviting trouble, locking it down comes with its own set of bullshit. The kind of bullshit that much larger companies hire, and pay very well, IT geeks to deal with.
thats a router that you can plug your aircard into and it acts like a wireless access point / router
