LQ9 into E39

Been busy with little bullshit. Working on friends cars, etc. My biggest hurdle is having a 2nd car right now, so that I can pull the motor from the BMW. I have my eye on a nice automatic ‘98 Legacy Outback Limited with heated leather. I have been spoiled by the creature comforts of the E39.

LS6 Yellow valve springs came in. Need to put these on the heads.

Sold my winter wheels to a guy in Rochester, was a nice relaxing drive.

Put my fiancee’s cat in the oven, she was a fan of that.

So back to the automotive portion of things…

My friend let me test fit his Style 65s. super wide and lots of rubbing.

Made good use out of the old stock LQ4 Van cam.

Beginning to clean up the block better. After some wirewheeling.

next important step: buy a winter vehicle so the BMW can come off the road!

2000 Subaru Outback 109K miles
2.5 Boxer 4-cyl, 5 speed, AWD
Power and heated cloth seats, heated mirrors, heated windshield
some nearly new Dunlop snow tires on it

taking the BMW off the road and registering the Suby this weekend.

Nice build, I’ll be watching this very closely!

if anyone local is interested in the M62 and 6 speed, come by and take a look before I pull it out of the car.

So, my fiancée was at her class last night for 4-5 hours and I had some time to get in the garage.

Made my own valve spring compressor tool with some crap I had laying around. How it’s supposed to look:

Not pretty but worked like a charm. How mine looked:

The valves started to come out with the aid of the beer of the evening. Pardon the grinding flakes on the bottle from me making the tool

Then the tenant in the lower apartment stopped by and offered me some whiskey…

So with the springs, retainers, valves and keepers removed from the heads, they’re ready to go to the machine shop. Just need to find time.

I still had the itch to do something so I grabbed a roll of tape and half empty can of plastidip and went to town on the winter car.

Drying, peeled back the badge

So, before

And after

Nice work, wouldn’t it have been easier to just remove the grill for dipping?

That was my first immediate thought as well. But, since the grille lifts with the hood, it’s not just some flimsy piece clipped into the hood, since it’s designed to withstand owners opening the hood by holding the grille. It’s actually secured to the hood via 9mm studs and bolts which all corroded and froze together a long time ago. I went to remove the first one and it immediately snapped the stud. Rather than deal with a grille flapping around forever, I said fuck it and had fun with tape.

Ahh well that makes perfect sense then.

Not sure why I never clicked on this thread before. to this project.

Needs more turbo updates…Looking forward to see the progress on this.

Fuck the turbo dreams, I won’t be going down that road for years. Between buying a house next year and getting married in Fall 2014 I’m sure I’ll have other priorities.

I need to find a T56 now.

For all you F-Body guys…what do you recommend for a clutch/fw setup? I for sure want a light flywheel, not sure what brands are proven out there though. Can I use an aftermarket light flywheel with a stock clutch? What’s a good stock clutch for my application? C6 Z06/LS7 clutch? Or should I just stick with a new LS1/LS2/LS6 clutch? I’m not shooting for any specific power number—just going for a fun street setup. Milled 317 heads, stock LS2 cam, some form of headers (I have a set of shorties to hack up) and a cold air intake. Stock LS1 intake manifold and TB.

People seem to have really good luck with the LS7 clutch…

Why don’t you try and find a used LS6 intake on LS1tech usually find them pretty cheap or maybe find a local one?

Because I’d rather get the car running before I start throwing performance parts at it that aren’t completely necessary.

Also, because I already had the LS1 intake

I’ll second LZ, just grab a LS7 clutch and you’ll be good to go.

Understandable

Just a btw if you go the LS6 intake route people buy used LS1 intakes on ebay for $150+ at least they did a year ago when I had a few.

good to know LZ. next summer when she’s running and i get bored with the power i plan on going with a big cam and LS6 intake. we’ll see. maybe some spray.

i had initially budgeted (months and months ago) for a monster clutch, not sure why, but i thought i’d need one. nice to know the LS7 will do the job.

Should I go to GMPartsDirect for it or somewhere else? Also, what light flywheel is recommended? I like super quick revs and I’ll be the only one driving the car. If a stock clutch is a 1 on the ease of driving scale and getting moving in an F1 car is a 10, i’d like to be around a 6 or so.

It’s not worth doing twice put the parts you want in now. I am selling my ls6 Friday but my hellion cam from new era is for sale

I’d find a use Fidenza 3 piece flywheel and slap on a new friction plate ($65) then I’d probably go with a LS7 or something else cheap and light.

so, i have a dumb question. try to keep the laughter and pointing to a minimum!

i unplugged and labeled most of the BMW harness from the M62. looking at all the plugs, there are many plugs that will no longer be used (for example, cam position sensors, bmw knock sensors, oil level sensor on pan, etc).

what do i do with these plugs? obviously they’ll never be used again, but can i really just cut/remove them? do i trace the wires all the way back to the BMW ECU and de-pin them and completely remove them? How will this affect the BMW ecu, and how much havoc will it cause with trying to get the car inspected (here in NYS, you cannot pass with a CEL on).

maybe someone that has swapped a motor from a different OEM into their vehicle can chime in.
