After the Z popped off last year, I wasn’t actively searching for a new project. I honestly planned on putting it back together… but I had a couple of e46 M3’s fall into my lap at a steal, both 2001 Imola Red non sunroof coupes, and I had some solid offers on parts from the Z (which is almost entirely gone now except for the chassis). One of them is a mostly stripped shell, the other is a roller. One of them is going together for me for a ground up competition car build, the other is probably being built for a friend of mine. I started working on mine this week and I’ll post a real update soon.
Currently I’m casually shopping for an LS based motor, probably an LS1, but trying to offload a few parts first to offset each other (Vipec, some radiators, etc). But going to start really digging into the first M3 next week.
I have some interior parts. PM me what you are looking for. That LS1 is not what I’m looking for price/options/location wise (I don’t live upstate anymore).
I’m definitely not doing a ls1 powered m3 with a dogbox at stock power levels, if that’s what you mean But I haven’t 100% decided on any engine power mods, just reliability ones.
I’m starting with the roller. It’ll still have stock subframes, unibody, steering rack, dashboard, some oem bodywork and a BMW differential (but modified with BMW motorsport clutches for the LSD). But most of the suspension arms will be changed, front steering knuckles modded, different shock/spring packages, etc.
The one on the left is how they arrived, with 1-2.5mm deep gashes in the original finish. Right side is starting to finish sanding and starting to polish.
Polished one out, and fit it into one of the original 1.5" lips. Not going to cut it, now trying to find 3.5" stepped 18" lips. Trying to make a set of 18x10 square wheels for the car.
Car is rocking carbon bodywork in front of the doors now. Also started working on radiator mounting and venting the hood for the radiator (not putting a GTR hood on) Need to black out those side grills. And yes it’s getting repainted imola red, not leaving the carbon bare.
