Following its brief campaign to support the doomed HD DVD format, Microsoft has now apparently entered into talks with Sony to bring Blu-ray disc technology to the Xbox 360. That once-unthinkable scenario was outlined today in a report in the British economic daily the Financial Times, two months after Xbox group marketing manager Albert Penello reopened the door to the possibility.
But a Microsoft rep said in a phone interview with Next-Gen that that is “not at all” the case, and Microsoft will “remain focused on the games” for the console, not its movie playback capabilities.
“There are no plans to introduce Blu-ray,” said the spokesperson.
I dont think the Xbox 360 has the need to go to BluRay for games just yet. I could see a BR player add on in the next year but I am willing to guarantee you will not see a native built in support for BR at all. Esp for games.
