Macbook pro to samsung lcd help

I just grabbed a mini dvi to hdmi converter for my computer and the picture works however im not getting any sound. TV is a samsung 32 LCD. it doesnt recognize any other outputs when its plugged in in the sound preference tab. Can i even get sound to my tv with this setup? i have been trying to read online and some people were saying it depends on which year mac you have

Macbook Pro 13 inch mid 2009 running leopard

Mini-Dvi does not support Audio so no, you would need a separate audio connection

huh. it said online (amazon) it was supposed to have audio and people wrote in the reviews it had worked for them. If i have to run a seperate cable what do I need to get? i dont see a plug-in in the tv for audio on the same channel as the hdmi port

unless its a newer macbook pro the mini dvi output on the macbook does not support audio. I had the same problem except the guy at the apple store told me it would work. i ended up calling apple support and they told me my macbook was not part of the newer model that supports audio. I got a 3.5mm to RCA cable and hooked it up to my surround sound.

nuts. alright thanks.
