I owuld put it against a legacy GT. Even thought im a scooby guy i bet it would be a faster car.

they are apparently fun cars… but not the most reliable motor around.
the Mazdaspeed 6 is 274fhp & awd. But is in NO WAY the same as the proteges. entirely different platforms.
Very likely. I don’t know the weights of the two cars but assuming they are even the MS6 should be a bit quicker. That would be pretty impressive.
The engine would need some internal work for that. There isn’t alot of headroom for increased boost from what I have heard.
There’s an Orange on at my work. i don’t know who owns it though.
I can imagine it is pretty fun.
notice the heat sheild bulges forward pretty far, and the o2 sensor is off to the side … thats the turbo
you are very correct my friend. the bottom end on the duratec’s are veryt weak. that motor is likely pushing a max of 7-8psi. any more and that thing will die in no time. cosworth makes some sick rods/pistons for it though along with a very nice intake manifold upgrade. that could easily see the high 300hp range.
My sister-in-law’s father has an 03 MSP and he liked it until he needed some warrenty service on it and could not find a dealer willing to work on it because they were not a “MAZDASPEED” dealer. Then in the mass confusion they smashed up the rear of his car and denied fault. He is still waiting on the outcome on that. I test drove one prior to getting the WRX and while it handled nicely i was not impressed with the car as a total package.
really? its just a stock bottom end?
i wouldnt think they would do that with a production car
those cars are pretty slick, i originally wanted one of them but i couldnt find one so i ended up getting the spec-v
edit- i remember reading somewhere that all you can safely expect out of the car without modding the engine is somewhere around 200-220ish whp
:word: and what about the air filter? Turbo? My ass!
Every review I’ve heard also says that the proteges will take little to nothing over stock boost levels before blowing up. Also the Mazdaspeed6 is being marketed more as a luxo-sports car. It is marketed to be competing against the legacy gt rather than the evo/sti market.
Edit: I’m curious to see how far they can push it with the direct injection fuel system they put on the new 6.
it must be because i wasnt the one tuning it. i bet i can put down 300 to the wheels with one.
Stock duratec bottom ends are already putting down 300+ whp. I’d have to dig for them, but there are two or three that I know of.
now if You swap out the cintered, cracked cap, powdered rods…
i’m gonna be asking you to do just that, come springtime.
I could be wrong but I don’t think the MSP has a duratec engine…the MS6 does though

highboost I think has done it with a mazda 3.
also with a 6.
marcy motorsports is nearing the 250whp range n/a.
there is another… FocusSport iirc.
:gotme:
ooo a protege thread
yes the mazdaspeed are awesome cars, I know of two in the area, a girl near me has one, i’ll have to get her out for a meet ths summer, CF hood and trunk if you see a silver one around(not till spring)
the stock boost is about 7 psi, you can turn them safely up to 10-11 without troubles.
I just got a recall in the mail two days ago for the intake mani, i dunno if any of you remember when my intake mani came apart and trashed my head. bout time they changed it fro a tsb to recall
the bottom ends on the protege is pretty good, the head suffers though
i forgot what magazine it was in but they did a top 100 handling cars and the mazdaspeed was pretty far up the list and was the only one on there under $30K
there are a few people out there putting 300+ to the wheels, doesn’t take a whole lot. but it is some custom work to be done
