Medical: What is...

What is eye crust? The little, yellow, crystaline substacnce that builds up in the corner of the eye socket? Mainly developed overnight (in my case) but can occasionally accumulate through out the day / waking hours.

One of You med students… anyone…?

/random question

i asked my wife who is a registered nurse/ex med student. she says there is no term for it. its just eye drainage. who knows…shes right most of time?

a conglomerate of things I would think.

The passage that runs from your nose to your eye (where the tears flow through) will bring up some debris.

who cares what it is as long as it tastes good

lol

There are so many names for it

sleep
eye crust
sleepy seeds
crusties

do’t forget mites … extremly small creatures that live on your eye lashes … so a combination of all that and mites

I know, hence the problem of trying to find info on google

But i was looking for something more scientific… :stuck_out_tongue:

i never get them :gotme:

i guess i dont have to cry myself to sleep everynight like the rest of you guys

maybe if we knew the “scientific” name we could find more on it. we can’t even agree on what to call it heh. i vote sleepies… or daddies?

Its the mixture of mucus and tears that are released from the ducts in your eyes, its used to lubricate your eye, but since your eyes are closed while sleeping they dont dry out, and therefore you get excess that building up, and dries out forming that crust.

Agreed… and LOL, nice!

So, with that being said, is it simply intra-cellular fluid? if so, why does the saline turn yellow? I thought the salt in saline was so much more mild :gotme:

I would think it is dust and other debris that got past the eyelashes. Then the fluids probably pushed it into the corners when blinking.
