Micro cars based on golf carts aren't safe in a crash... WHO KNEW?

http://money.cnn.com/2010/05/20/autos/iihs_nev_crash_tests/index.htm

I think I’ll file this one under “duh”.

And to everyone who sucks at reading, the smart car is lumped into this group, because they crashed one of the LSVs into it, even though it’s NOT a LSV, nor did it perform poorly in these tests…

Yeah, crashing into a golf cart is about the only want to make a smart car look good in a crash.

Chrysler Group’s Gem car takes a side impact from a Smart ForTwo (right) and a Tiger Star mintruck after a front impact with a Ford Ranger.

I guess Chrysler was paying for these sets of test.

*didn’t read the article yet.

In all fairness for the smart4two, it is pretty damn safe for it’s weight/size. Of course a larger/heavier vehicle is going to win in a crash. Let’s see a video of the c-class hitting a suburban head on so we can see how safe the mercedes is.

I’d take the c-class in that bet. It’s still got a ton of safety features and proper crumple zones.

The key piece missing in all these tiny cars, especially the Smart, is a lack of crumple space. They build the shell to withstand a crash but the forces of the crash get transferred almost untouched to the passenger. So you’ll be in one piece but all your internal organs will be mush.

but you will get really good mpg and you are saving the environment!!!
