I dont see this happening.
Has Microsoft come out and said it is gonna limit it based on the applications “running”? Not that I know of.
Also, what defines an Application?
iTunes installed 4 services alone and then the application. My virus scanner is 2 exe processes running.
I dont see it happening. I think I remember someone saying that Vista was gonna be like this too but never did.
The logic of it is pretty cool since someone typically on a netbook might be using the internet, instant messenger, email. They dont need 50 programs running but over all, I don’t see it being real esp. after the fail that Vista had.
Do you know what that edition gets installed on?
I call BS but don’t really care either way because I never use the base edition of an OS.
The way most programs install you wouldn’t even be able to boot without having more than 3 programs running. Winzip, Itunes, Quicktime and Adobe all install helper applications that start on boot. All of those apps “commom” users would have installed.
Seriously, this is for things like netbooks, not “real computers.”
Running Windows 7 now, and I like it more than Vista. More than XP, too.
Windows 7 Starter
Market: Worldwide availability this time but with new PCs only
Key features: Enhanced taskbar, Jump Lists, Windows Media Player, Backup and Restore, Action Center, Device Stage, Play To, Fax and Scan, basic games
What’s missing: Aero Glass, many Aero desktop enhancements, Windows Touch, Media Center, Live thumbnail previews, Home Group creation
This version will only be sold through PC makers to users, but unlike with Vista, it will be sold worldwide. This suggests that netbook makers will choose this version, even in the US. As with previous Windows Starter Edition products, it is limited in some ways: You can run only three applications at once, don’t get Windows 7’s full mobility capabilities, and can participate in but not create a Home Group. Also, there’s no Aero Glass.
Who really needs to run more than 3 simultaneous applications on netbook? Not trying to be a dick here. I’m just pointing out that this really is a non-issue.
really depends what you consider an application.
Is my wireless manager an application?
If I have FireFox, Thunderbird and Pidgin open, then that is 3 legit programs. Then lets say I want to switch up my wireless settings. So I open the “DELL wireless manager” or maybe a quick game of solitaire while you wait for facebook status updates. What happens then? I have to shut down FireFox to start up my wireless manager? Come on now, it is BS.
What about Firefox for NYSpeed, Thunderbird for my email, Pidgin for my friends, and a music player?
it is probably what shows up in applications… not processes. hence, the specific usage of the word applications
Being that ‘Starter Edition’ is only being sold with new machines, you would hope that manufacturers would take the time to develop their applications, like the Dell Wireless Manager, into processes so that it doesn’t qualify as an ‘application’.
hah, fat chance
Until I see a Microsoft written break-down of what constitutes an “application”, then I am saying that this WILL fail.
You sit around waiting for facebook status updates?
t’was a joke
