i recent bought a mikuni TM 38mm carb for my 1985 honda odyssey 350
and i’m having a heck of a time getting it tuned correctly. At first it was running fine, but the 3/4 to full throttle was sluggish. i changed the main jet size then tried it again but even worse, the whole maching was sluggish now and would barely get enough rpms to get over the stall converter to move. and would backfire greatly. Do you think maybe the main jet was too larger and i should lean it out or maybe the pilot jet ??
anyone?
the main jet is for full throttle. if it’s not revving out and sounds dull then lean it out. you say it’s sluggish to, that probably a combination of the needle and pilot. set air screw while engine is hot, turn it till you get the highest idle. the pilot and air screw are for off idle response. they overlap into the needle and slide which are midrange, which overlap into the main jet for top end.
sounds to me like you have an infected odyssey, you should sell it to me before all of your other toys get destroyed
eurodad is the man for this type of question.
i dropped it off at barnhart’s honda suzuki in ruff creek, pa i tried everything and it couldnt get it to stay running now. it would start then shut back off
do you think maybe the sluggish bottom end was going from a 32mm kehnin to a 38mm mikuni?
thanks for the carb advice though
:jerkit:
haha
there’s 2 other odysseys i know of if you want one
yes
i thought so. i plan on doing many more mods in the future so the sluggish bottom will do for now.
you’ll get some back with the right jetting
also, i think the shop i bought the carb from set the carb to factory setting for the odyssey. do you think being the bigger carb it was getting more fuel with factory settings which are for the smaller carb?
i know back in the day i had a suzuki 250S quadsport. my uncle bought me a 38mm performance carb for it ( i think stock was 34?) and we could never get it to jet in correctly. he messed with it, had a few other ppl do it and a dealer. eventually i just sold the carb and had a shop do some work to the stock one and it ran awesome.
the stock one was really bad inside. the floats and such were real rusty and the bottom of the bowl was cracked. i wanted to get it fixed but the cost of getting it fixed plus the lack of parts available for kehnin carbs made it cost more than the new carb. the shop i bought it from is called odyssey slavage in kansas who specializes in the odysseys and pilots. the mechanic at barnharts is very knowledgable on the odysseys so i hope he can get it running good. the carb tuning is very crucial on the odysseys since many had engine problems overheating and if im too lean it will run too hot and cook my piston and such
if the company you bought it from specialized in odysseys, you should have asked them for some baseline jetting to get you started.
they did. and i was making the final jettings like changing the main and also the pilot jet
when i had the baseline in, after some riding to get it warm for the tuning, it started to bogg real bad and wanted to stall out. then it did stall and wouldnt start up again
