after the “October Storm” , my garage really took a beating, I was unsure how long the roof would continue to stand. Also note the previous owner neglected the hell out of the garage and really hacked a ton of shit together. It was ok for general purposes, but I work in the garage quite a bit so i really wanted something functional for me.
Come spring, I decided I wanted to tear the whole thing down and start over…being able to build it exactly how I wanted it. With town codes, they wouldnt let me rebuild. It would be ok to tear it down, but due to the distance of the garage to the property line, it was “against code” to rebuild.
So I decided I would tip-toe around the system and still get what I wanted out of it. ripped off the entire roof right down to the walls, and also ripped out the front face to change from (2) 8 foot doors to one 16 foot door. Here is a bunch of pics from the demo/build. These are from a little over a year ago.
This summer aside from side jobs fiberglassing I got some more work done. im still in the process of finishing up a few odds and ends in the garage like finishing painting all the new benches, and some old 40’s-50’s stuff. I’m going with a WWII style theme with as referenced here:
I built a rim/tire rack to get them off the ground, but it has yet to be painted…and most of the crap in the pic has been discarded along with most of the following pics. These were taken roughly 3 weeks ago.
The cabinets I picked up from another NYSpeeder. Painted and mounted. Thanks Jaegermeister!
pegboard going up
pegboard in, and inserts painted with tools up
the flip top bench with doors on it and painted. Behind the doors is my shop-vac. All the benches are on lockable wheels to make for easier cleaning and versatility.
the big(5’w X 6’h) storage unit also on wheels. sorry for the sideways pics
the newest bench, with a table saw insert built in. yet to get the actual saw, but you get the idea…
I still have a bunch to do, and have alot done since these pics were taken. I’ll get upto date pics up soon, but figured some might enjoy the past progress.
Wow that garage looked kinda scary on the inside before. Very nice turn around. I think im going to show that tire rack to my father. He tried to put his wheels on the wall like they were hubcaps lol.
I’m going to do about the same to my garage next spring, rip off the roof, rip out the front. Should be fun.
there were 2 reasons for that…It was against code to make the roof any higher, and I would have needed all new concrete poured which I just simply wasn’t going to pay for. I don’t plan on being in this house too much longer, but my next garage will most certainly have one.
Has it really been that long? Damn, swing over for a beer sometime :beer2:
thanks man
That would be my wife
lol, what did you think it was? Well…it does kinda look like space ship, lol. It’s a highly modified cavalier unfortunately. :lolham:
Ya, unfortunately.
Ya, Spec can testify that the garage was a bit…well…uncomforting towards the end. when you would look at it from the side after the Oct. storm, there was a huge bow in the ridge that looked like the garage was smiling at you, lol.
Hmmm, that’s a good question. I want to say it is about 4" thick. I could be wrong though. My memory sucks, lol.
thanks for all the comments guys. I’ll have some more pics of it getting closer to finished probably this weekend
