My weekend project, just needs a nice bleeding

For those that don’t know, GM in their infinite wisdom has fitted smaller brakes to the first year’s new-gen GTO - even though they used Corvette-sized calipers.

So now I’ve taken the opportunity to rectify that situation, by swapping out from the '04 to the '05-'06 front brakes…

Here’s a comparison of the “new” stock and my old slotted rotors:

If you doubt the size, here they are side-by-side: (and for those that are curious - it’s 320mm vs. 296mm.)

And the new calipers (I couldn’t resist a little customization, but FWIW, it is OEM-style):

All that, and a new Russell braided stainless line, and it’s bleeding time…

Hopefully, they won’t warp as badly as the slotted rotors. And now I have to go swap out the rear lines, too.

Huge difference

so just the 05/06 rotor is needed, nothing else?

A couple things are needed:

'05-'06 rotors, calipers, brackets and lines, and shims/sleeves to fit the brake bracket mounting bolts (14mm on the '04, 16mm on the '05-'06).

I also had to remove the dust shield to get the brackets to fit - but it was rusting off anyway.

wow, thats a big difference! that will look a lot better

You test them out yet?? I have a '97 Grand Prix…I put a pair of larger rotors/caliper brkt. from a Impala police package car) Put on some Hawk (street pads) and flushed the brake fluid with some DOT4 syn. HUGE difference.
When I’m doing a WOT run, I brake hard to get downto the speed limit…watching the speedo take a dive is almost as surprizing as the accel.

Nice Write-up:tup:
