After spending all day (9am til around 3) in this shit weather outside I am tired of dealing with it. I got the exhaust done today but that was about it. On top of the shit weather, nothing went right (welder decided to keep jamming, couldnt find any of the tools i needed, etc). Now I still need the ebrake fixed. I tightened the adjustment but had no luck so Im thinking its either the brakes or the cables. I wanna see if someone who has a garage/shop and wants to make some extra cash would wanna do it for me in the near future. if you can, or you know someone who can help me out shoot me a rough estimate if you could so I can figure out if this is gonna happen this week or have to wait.
Obviously a simple brake vs. replacing the cables completely will be different prices so if you could just give me an idea on each or give me a “worst case scenerio” i would appreciate it.
Thanks guys.

ebrake on the golf? the VW drums usually work quite well, not many issues with cables freezing on them. but its easy enough to check, just pull the drum off and have someone put the handle. theres a good chance the shoes/drums are just shot.
well after the frustration from yesterday wore off, I decided to go out and check it out today (had to put the muffler on anyways). Got the pass. side wheel off, but couldnt get the drum off (dont want to force anything until I get some cash to be able to fix it). But the wheel spins freely. The driver’s side is a different story… Cant get the wheel off and will probably need some heat and a good cleaning. Also, the wheel seems very difficult to spin so I’m thinking the brakes are seized which means more work. But I am 100% tapped out on cash right now so it will have to wait til next paycheck.
Edit: Just read my haynes manual and apparently I gotta pull that center cotter-pin/nut off to get the drum off. Goes to show you how many FWD cars I work on… I’ve never seen a rear drum like that… lol
thats just because the VW wheel bearing on the mk1-mk3 cars has the outer bearing race on the inside of the drum, and the inner race on the inner stub axle. they dont use a sealed bearing until the mk4 cars.
Just like the old Plymouth Sundances and other cars like those.
Advice is free man, call me if you get stuck.
pm wayne or skanks
