Need some HELP AUDI

I have a 83 audi gt coupe, daily, I am clueless as to what its issue is, start it up and quicklt dies, them will no start at all. No I changed the fuel filter(didnt need but I elimated that), Fuel pump is getting juice, and functioning 100%, I pull a plus checked spark, very healthy, No this has the werid fuel injection system where there are 8 lines on top on the air filter box, 5 going into the head(yes 5 cly), 1 into the intake(my guess is for intinal gas for startup) and 2 going to a steel block mounted on the driver side of the motor. Now I cracked ope the main line from the pump to make sure there was a main soruce of Gas coming up and it is, also craked open a few other gas lines just to see if gas was flowing through the various lines. Now I cranked it for 15 seconds and then pulled a plug and had not a spec of gas on the plugs, I noticed a couple of sensors that I am not familiar with and was wondering if any may have some insight as to what I should do or replace from past experince with this kinda of setup. Also I check all fuses and they are in perfect working order. :dunno:

Try looking for help on AudiWorld. Here’s the link to the 4000- GT Coupe forum. http://forums.audiworld.com/4000/

There are a bunch of W. PA people on there so be sure to mention you are in Pittsburgh. Good luck.

that ‘thing’ with the fuel lines is the fuel distributor… it works with the airbox… make sure the flap in the airbox is working good? that’s what makes the fuel mixture… the single line is the cold startup line… sounds like that could be the issue maybe?

sorry… dont’ know the 5cy well enough… i should be getting mine iwthin a few weeks so i shoul dbe more educated int he future…

have you manually adjusted the idle? could just need to tweak the set screw a little?

That valveright near the throttle linkage is the ISV (idle stableization vale right), I adjusted that in a position, I put in a new air filter, and used a towel to wiped out some dirt think maybe I jammed that door shut possible?

the square block that mounts on the engine block w/ 1 braided fuel line and a 2 prong elctrical plug is a warm up regulator. those go bad. older 8v vw’s have them too, but not sure if interchangable. probably are, figuring i allways put audi 5k turbo ones on my vw’s.

can you get teh car to run by holding the gas peddle? my guess is the warmup reg, or isv/cold start valve, or even something as stupid as the screw backed out of the throttle body to set the idle. kinda hard not seeing it.

but word of advice, if the fuel distributor is varnished over/i.e. has bad gas-- your not goign to be able to clean it and go. be better off putting on a used one.

I reinstalled the air box and starts up fine but stumbles for the first 2-3 min like maybe a problem with that"warmup regulator", could that cause this issue, ----->hit the gas and it stumbles till it gets warm then runs fine if i hit the gas?

grab a warm up reg and isv and swap them… i think it’s the same as vw parts… any CIS injection model…

advance sell them, “CIS injection”?

“cis” is hte type of fuel injection on those models…

lol where do you get ur parts that r not 400.00 a piece???

off junk around the garage… or at a junk yard!

sechrist has mad 8v CIS injected cars.

2 questions 1 what is 8v, and what do you think gas milage out of this car should be,

eight valve :dunno:

eight valve and a properly running car should get decent milage. not one with cold start issues!

model car to look for. i ment! thought that was a model like a6,a4 etc

it runs very rich!,

8v is in refernce to the older mechanical fuel injected motors in vw’s. they had 8v’s, or 2 valves per head. the audi are 10v, as they are a 5 cylinder.

gas mnielage should eb atleast 20-30 range on a well kept car. i know on my rich 16v, i woudl get 20mpg. on my cabby when it was stock, i got 35mpg.

biggest thing w/ mechanical fuel injected vw/audis is alot of [places dont properly work on them. i seen people/shops replace fuel pumps/fuel tanks/ injectors/etc and not solve the problem. it is a pita for people not use to it.

the idle air valve, you can grab one off a rabbit, audi, older bmw’s. they all dont intergchange, but you can make them work via splice wires.

as for the warm up reg, oldr audi 4k, 5k, rabbits, quantums, and a few others have them. the audi 5k is the hard one to get, as people doing junkyard turbo setups run them.

i’ll look and see if i have any of this shit.

easy way to check the isv is when you first start the car, unplug the electrical connector to it. does it do anything? car run worse, better, no change?

oh yeah, not sure if your car is still old non lamda cis, or cis lambda which uses an o2 sensor. if it uses an 02 sensor, i’d check that as well.

old cis is essentially a fuel injected carb. no electronics at all, all mechanical.

cis lamba uses an o2 sensor.

cis-e is mechanical/electrical–it sucks balls. found in the later 16v’s. i usually convert back to cis non lambda also known as european cis.

Ill take a pic and post under the hood, I dont have a book nor never owned an import but I understand the theroy of its operation, just dont know where the parts are.
