Need some help pricing out a desktop build

I am looking for a new desktop. I have found one that I think fits my needs and my budget. Question is how much would YOU pay for something like this, completely assembled with Windows 7/8 on it already.

CPU Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core
Motherboard ASRock Z97M-ITX/AC Mini ITX LGA1150
Memory G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600
Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
GPU EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB ACX 2.0
Case Corsair SPEC-01 RED ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply Corsair 550W ATX12V / EPS12V

I figure with this setup, I can eventually upgrade my monitor to something 1440 and hopefully run this setup for 5 years minimum. I only have a laptop right now, from 2008 mind you and I’m looking for something that can do day to day stuff as well as a little gaming.

Thoughts?

I don’t like the motherboard, I’d probably go with the Black Series for Hard Drive from Western Digital, I’d also probably bump up that PSU. Not sure what games you’re playing but if you’re not a heavy gamer, I might scale down that video card to save a little $$$. Maybe go with the Radeon 290X.

I’d assume based on just rough calculations in my head and with no research, you’d probably be looking at around $1,000 for that setup + maybe $100 for Windows 8.

Yeah the video card may be a bit too much for what I need. What exactly is wrong with the motherboard? Personal preference?

Other than a bit of gaming, I will surely be running solidworks on this computer, but that should be no problem.

I think I still have my official win 8 x64 in the box somewhere I’d sell it cheap say 50$ I’ll edit this post if I find it

I see no real reason not to run an SSD. Why traditional spinning drive?

Run a hybrid of your worries about space and speed, best of both worlds

Pretty much, I’d prefer a Full ATX board, unless it is and I’m reading it wrong.

I’d probably go the SSD route too, but if you need the space and want to save a few bucks. I guess go with a standard drive. Or Run SSD as the main and storage on HDDs.

Even in a mini atx tower you’ll have plenty of space for multiple drives. I’d run an SSD and then a traditional spinning drive for cold storage if you really need it.

Storage space is never as much of a concern for me as is speed. SSD is a no brainer nowadays.

Cost. I’m trying to keep this pretty basic to start. I can always add a SSD later.

Finished this a while ago:

Intel Core i5‑4690K 3.5 GHz
ASRock Z97 pro4
WD Blue 1TB
G.SKILL Ares 8GB
Corsair CS550M
Corsair Spec 01

After looking at what I will use this for I decided to turn it into more of a budget build than anything else. My friend got a few clearance specials at Microcenter and I shopped the black friday deals hard. In the end I spend about $430. As you will see I still don’t have a video card. I’ve only been playing a few games, Dirt 3 etc. and the computer is still hooked up to my plasma TV. So far I haven’t had any issue running the games I’ve been playing on mild settings with onboard graphics. :ham:

But I do need to get a graphics card… Also I’m having a wierd issue that my computer will turn on without me doing anything. The fans/lights turn on but it doesn’t actually boot. I just turn off the power supply when I’m done, but thats kind of annoying.

WD Blue as your OS drive

SSD or nothing man. They’re not that expensive anymore and the difference with having your OS and main programs installed on an SSD vs slow platter drive is night and day.

Wow they are pretty cheap, I just looked em up. Maybe I’ll pick one up when I get my video card.

ASRock boards like to add features that do stupid things like you’re describing. Go into bios and turn off App Charger, Dehumidifier, and anything regarding wake on mouse/keyboard. Check to see if there is a program installed for the app charger as well and get rid of it. I had one that was related to the app charger “feature” randomly detecting my mouse as a chargeable device and it would do exactly what you’re describing. Annoying for sure.

If you’re not gaming much and are actually getting by with the onboard, maybe watch slickdeals for a GTX 960 or R9 380x, either would put you to pretty decent graphics levels without breaking the bank.

I have a R9 270 I’ll sell cheap. Picked it up for $100 about a year ago. Would sell for less. I need something a little more powerful.

Thanks for the tip, I will check it out. And thats exactly what I was thinking about doing for a card.

Thanks, I will hit you up if I’m interested.

Don’t forget to hit up slickdeals and search for SSD. Prices are down in general but about every week I see a great sale on an SSD.
