I need to get some new tires on my Mini Cooper GP and with all the options looking for some opinions. The stock size is 205/45/17 and I can fit 215/45/17 on it to help protect the rim lips.
I need something that is going to be good on the street and a little track use. Have a HDPE event in June then driving across the country to California in july for mini takes the states.
I was looking at Pilot Super Sports, Potenza S-04s any other options? I know getting a set of track tires would be best but not sure if i plan on keeping the car after this summer.
I loved my old 615’s but i didn’t have the 615K which I understand to be quite a bit better. I used them both at the street and track and they held up great .
wear like iron? they seem to have a low tread rating at 200. What kind of mileage were you getting out of them? Did you track them at all? they seem to be the same price point as the PSS.
I had it figured out better at one point, with proper alignment & rotation Zii and RT615K should both last 48+ hours in race conditions, so 3,500-4,000 + race miles and 0 street miles?
I have one HPDE planned then whatever Mini has us doing at the track in California. I don’t mind buying another set before the trip i just don’t want a set of tires that will be bald after 5000 miles of city driving.
Wear like iron for the TW rating. I did OLOA in a set. They did 6000+ street miles, 5 track events and still have about 40% tread.
I agree that a rival-s or re71r will be a faster track tire but they do wear faster as well. For a dual purpose tire, I’d go with the z2 star spec or the rs3v2. I’m most likely putting z2’s on the vette.
Actually, if all you are doing is ONE track event then the Direzza Z102 is a better option.
They are $53 cheaper each.
They will last longer on the street.
They provide adequate grip on the track.
I’ve intentional put drivers that I was training on “bad” all seasons with favorable results, Z102 are much much better in this regard. I’ve seen other LeMons teams compete on Z101/Z102. They do not have the 10/10ths grip of the ZII, but they still are adequate for race conditions, they will audibly communicate better than ZII which is ideal for less experienced drivers. The only thing I’d recommend is try to get in 2 tire rotations before the HPDE and try to do one tire rotation in the middle of the day, but that is if you want the wear evenly and last a few years. If you don’t care if they last then don’t rotate and they still will probably be fine.
