Need Your Input/Experiences/KnownProblems about an 02 RSX Type-S

I’m seriously considering picking up this 2002 Acura RSX Type-S from a 1 Ownder, Private Seller with 60,000 miles.

-Car is MINT inside and out, owner took very good care of the car.
-Factory OEM A-Spec Body Kit was professional painted and installed
-Lowered on Progress Springs
-Progress Rear sway bar
-Mobil 1 Syntec Oil
-HID’s

*Aside from that the car is pretty much stock. (No Engine Mods)
*CarFaxed it, everything is cleann

Here is my dilema:
-Last year i put 25,000 Miles on my BMW and towards the end (before i sold it) stupid, random, pointless shit would constantly break or go wrong leaving me with, not only a car payment, but a maintaince bill every month.

So:
-Can anyone give me their opinion on whether or not to get it (considering i will put 25k a year on it)
-Common problem area’s and/or things to look for

*I hear that the Timing Chain Tensioners go bad in them (around 75k?) other than that i hear nothing but great thing

Thanks for your time,
Stenzel.

honestly over the bimmer i think they are great cars. you would be happy with them worst i have had to do is a clutch on other than that just basic maintenance

I have a 02. Bought it last year with about 83k on it? Its been almost a year and is just over 90k. Only issue is the 2nd gear synco being a little funny at time (a well known issue with most all of them). Putting the right tranny fluid in helps it out some. Other than that I love the car for daily use, its been a great all around car. Those suspenison mods you listed wouldn’t be my first choices though. The RSX suspension doesn’t take well to being lowered too far. And I dunno how that rear bar would work out since factory the back end is decently stiff. I personally would not want too much more than that on the street. But honestly its probably not that big of a deal. If the car drives ok and its clean then its probably worth it. Goes good in the snow too (with proper tires of course). Picture from the beaverun snow cross.

i have an 06 si which is fairly close to the type s the most common issue and it is with all honda 6 speeds is 2nd, and 3rd, gear but once i installed amsoil syncromesh all the issues went away

as to answer your question about the timing chain tensioner i haven’t heard of any issues nor do i have anywhere the mileage to have that issue yet

I owned a 02 rsx-s from brand new untill around 40k with no issues other than wear items…and there is some problems with the chain tens but not all have the issue…i have seen one guy with a 04 when i lived in arizona with 203k on his and it still ran like a champ…but it is all in keeping up on the mant with the engine and tranny…i changed my tranny fluid evry 5k and oil evry 2k…but im a tech so i dont pay for fluids…and dont lower it on stock struts they will blow within a few thousand miles get a set of koni or kyb agxs when u get springs…and do not run syth oil if prevous owner didnt…you will burn the shit out of it…trust me ive seen it lots of times

but they are very good cars but are a little high in insurance i was paying more to insur the car than my car payment was

It runs great and drives solid. The progress springs i think only lower it 1.25 inches so its not over kill and the stock struts aren’t blown out (yet haha). As for oil, owner said he always ran mobil 1 syntec.

I’d like to thank everyone for their input! As it turns out, my loan went through in my name today and i just purchased insurance (You were right about it being high haha) The car will be in my name tomorrow

Nice.post some pics when u get it.

mine runs great, only thing that I eve saw a problem was 3rd gear, and it is common…

if you want more info go onto clubrsx.com and just look around the forums… If you do buy it I have a stock 05 type-s whole cat back exhaust for free!!! Damn things been in my garage since I took it off 5 yrs ago

Bought it yesterday and already put 200+ miles on it, I Love It!

As soon as i have some freetime i’ll post up some pictures

Is there any difference between 02 Type-S to 05 Type-S Exhaust?

05-06 exhaust is the same as the Type R exhaust

I would have taken this for free when I bought my '03 in January!

Sorry for the big and shitty quality pictures but you get the idea…(with stock and konig rims pictured)

Sharp car.

They look alot better in person imo, but yeah not my 1st choice in rims if i was to buy them.

I cleaned my inbox out now,…Let me know how much you want and i can come grab them whenever your available. I can come get it as quick as tonight if you want.

Thanks!

rsx-s is a great car, biggest issues is:

some burn more oil than others(1 qt over 5000 miles sometimes, depends on a lot of things)
cmc blows out (depends on if its got an aftermarket clutch or not)
2nd/3rd gear synchros sometimes cause grinds (change fluid to a good quality MTF, like amsoil)
front seats in the 02-04 have shitty leather and will crack over time if not cared for

there is probably 1000 other little things I could go on and on about but nothing major or something that would cost you money down the road, they are good cars though. Very safe for a small hatchback.

oh and I’ve never seen or heard of anything having the timing chain tensioner fail on a stock cam car. Typically the chain stretches or the tensioner wears out if you use big cams in the car, non-oem lift, etc… that is the biggest reason for failure.

good luck, car looks really nice (minus the wheels)
