no worries.
So first I took off the fuel rail, popped all the injectors out and cleaned everything nicely with starting fluid and lots of psi…
The fuel rail didn’t really have any debris in it.
Each injector has 4 spray holes in it, obviously. On cyl. 1 and 2, there was minor buildup blocking atleast 1 of the holes. After cleaning them, I was sure it was the issue.
Cleared previous codes, started it up and went for a ride. 10 minutes in the code popped back up.
Went back and swapped injector 1 with injector 4. Same thing. That pretty much concluded it wasn’t a fuel issue.
So i pulled all the plugs. No build up on any of them, they are all burning gas and not oil. Another good sign.
Then I switched #4 and #1 plug wire, which didn’t change anything.
I did notice that there was some corrosion buildup on the terminals of the coil. I cleaned them off and, even though i had my fingers crossed, the misfire code held strong.
So lastly, I decided to bust out the timing gun.
After watching cyl 1 and 2 miss horribly, I think my conclusion is the ignition coil.
Cyl 1 and 2 are both missing very sporadicly. Which, if it were actually a timing issue (as in cam position), i would likely have issues on all 4. But cyl 3 and 4 both were hitting right on the money.
Next step, replace the Ignition coil and see where that leads me.

in reference to the terminals on the coil itself? they are round, look just like the top of a spark plug.
If that isn’t what you are talking about, let me know.
he was refering to the wiring harnes plug… there should be 3 round pins or 3 flat pins.
also… If you do the srt 2.4 swap.
megasquirt has been a pain in my ass. So look into just using a rrfpr

ahh, ok. I’ll check it out after work.
and yea, i read your thread about the problems with it… I’m a couple weeks out still, so keep me updated on your results.
Whaaaaat, megasquirt is easy. RRFPR is hack, if you have the means to do so much more, like control spark and fuel more precisly with a stand alone.
Just call me up if you need help with it, its only like 8 wires, that shits easy.

burnttoast, i’ll buy the car from you for 800 bucks.

haha… i just bought it though…
I know, I was going to buy it but you got it instead. If you don’t want to fix it, i’ll take it.

Nah, I already have a bunch of stuff gathered for the srt swap.
If anything changes i’ll be sure to let you know.
go big turbo, srt turbo falls on its face at like 5k. That motor is good to spin to 7200 easy. You’ll thank yourself

Impressive… a 98 with round pin. I thought the change over was much earlier then that…? My 95 is shitty roundpin

I found a replacement coilpack.
I wasn’t certain what he meant by “round pin” until it was clarified for me.
Mine uses flat pins.
But yea, new coilpack = no more misfire.
Problem solved, now i can get it inspected.
I’ll be doing the srt swap in a few weeks. Going to do it at my friends garage (which happens to be bigger than most houses…rich fuckers).
I’m hoping for it to take no more than 14 hours, including the transmission.
If anyone wants to come help, let me know. I’ll have cold beers for after. It’ll be a friday-saturday-sunday project.
God I’m good at Neons.
As for the SRT swap…don’t count on 14hrs. Count on closer to 14 days. What are you doing for engine controls? Water/oil lines? Charge pipes?
the 2.4 swap isnt that big of a deal. but with turbo and if you do megasquirt, it will take a little longer.
I can lend a hand if need be. Just make sure you have everything that you need first

yea definitely.
I’ve been going down the list from the wonderful how-to at neons.org.
though i just got hit with some doctor bills (no insurance=death)… so it may be postponed 1 more week.
I got a srt4 turbo, mani, wastegate, all oil and coolant lines, ect… so i will be going with that setup for now. I know the srt stock turbo isn’t the best, but it’s a start and within budget at this point.
let me know when you think you have all the parts, and send me your parts list. I’ll look it over to see if your missing anything
My 3 day SRT turbo swap (with help from a few VERY proficient people) took about 2 weeks

Thanks, I will.
I’ll be in touch.
