Not really, the incentive is to install the furnace, and that is exactly what was done.
There are plenty of retailers on ebay that sell furnaces, they express freight them to your door.
I’d bet you pay about half online versus ordering through a local vendor (markup)…
Looks good. The actual install is the easy part. There are many calculations and others factors to properly size out furnaces and duct work. My furnace is 90%+ efficient but my duct work is rediculously outdated.
I had a company come and install 2 furnaces in my duplex and then I installed 2 HWT’s. So I received $300 for each furnace (93% efficiency, rebates apply to 90% and above) and $150 for each HWT (.64 EF rating, rebates apply to .61 and above).
I got the HWT’s at sears on close out for $425 each, minus 15%, minus the $300 in rebates for them… grand total of $422 and they came with a 12 year warranty.
Nice job and write up!
How did you size what btu furnace you needed?
Call a furnace installer, get free estimate, go shop on ebay for similar furnace?
If you call one of the ebay retailers and give them the details on your house they will be able to size it out for you. The one ebay place I called has been in business for like 30+ years and they quoted me $2200 shipped for a Goodman 95% efficiency furnace, a/c unit, coil etc.
I still dont know what route I am going to take.
i need to plumb a cold air return system instead of just having my crawl space swept volume… gonna be a pita, and going to have to get some info before i even attempt it. i just bought a pellet stove used to cover the cost of heating the place this winter.
Were any of the sheetmetal parts “off the shelf”?
Nice work Pat. i can say HVAC is one of the few systems I haven’t done myself yet.
X…
Very nice work.
Kind of a dumb question…
I see the Plenum and Cold Air return…are the PVC pipes the Flue? Why are there 2?
I don’t know much about newer furnaces as I have a boiler.
This is what I see:
The PVC pipes are the air for the combustion chamber; ones’s a air feed, the other is the exhaust.
All High-Efficency Forced Air furnances are this way.
one is an air intake, the other is an exhaust outlet…I THINK
edit: I am too slow
Ok, so if you have in intake and exhaust going through PVC is the chimney no longer used at all?
EDIT: Nevermind, found the answer.
^ yes except for the hot water tank, unless that it has a blower on it also.
You will probably need to put a sleeve in your chimney so the hot water tank can vent properly. Or else you’ll end up with some CO in your basement.
Warranty still good with your own install?
Any idea why? I mean, my hot water heater vents out my chimney all spring, summer and fall without the furnace running so why should venting a new furnace differently matter?
So obviously the exhaust isn’t warm enough for the PVC to be harmed?
Yup, with all HE furnaces the exhaust is about as warm as what comes out of a hair dryer.
