One theory is that hydrogen will be safer than gas if punctured.
Gas leak = puddle on ground, then ignites
Hydrogen leak = lighter than air, floats away

hydrogen is extremely combustible, but dissolves into other gases incredibly fast and becomes quite safe. hydrogen fires are often concentrated at the source of the leak.
