While we only have IHRA tracks around here, usually they follow NHRA closely, so this might make a huge difference in the near future. Now some of you have no excuse.
(No bar needed for 2008 stock firewall car down to 9.99)
NHRA DRAGS: STREET LEGAL STYLE PRESENTED BY AAA (Page xiv) (5th paragraph)
Additionally Requirements and specifications for Street Legal are the same as
those for the Summit Racing Series with the following exception: Unaltered 2008
OEM model year and newer production cars running slower than 9.99 and 135
mph do not have to meet the requirements and specifications for the Summit
Racing Series except for the following: Convertibles and T-tops must meet
Summit Racing Series Roll Bar and Roll Cage requirements, All drivers must
meet the Summit Racing Series Helmet and Protective Clothing requirements.”
i realize that this is being addressed as newer cars are becoming faster right from the factory then they used to, however i feel that they should still be required to meet the safety rules of the rest of the cars…but thats just me.
This is true… They are more dangerous on the street than anything. A guy on another forum got killed a couple months ago from a minor accident in his Camaro. This is one of the things that is holding me back from a 25.5… Just way too much going on for the street that could kill me instead of help.
Embed it in the A/B pillar and roof; it’ll give you some more safety/room to move around. Not sure if it’s IHRA/NHRA legal, and it costs some more $$; but I’ve seen a few cars with it done, and it’s really slick.
A guy had a 25.5 cage with the funny car bars that goes around the drivers head. He took the car for a lap around his shop after fixing something on the camaro, someone ran a stop sign at like 30 mph, and his head bounced off the funny car hoop and he died from brain damage a few days later.
No one around here has a cage like that that they drive on the street with
The other thing here is cheap aftermarket seats failing or racing seats on a street car that are not braced properly those failing and you smashing a roll bar.
Roll bars r required to have padding anywhere ur head can possibly come in contact with(don’t know how that’s done w/a funny cage). Having a 5 pt harness is the way to go, ur upper can’t move at all.
