New NHRA rollbar rules for 2008+ vehicles

While we only have IHRA tracks around here, usually they follow NHRA closely, so this might make a huge difference in the near future. Now some of you have no excuse.

(No bar needed for 2008 stock firewall car down to 9.99)

NHRA DRAGS: STREET LEGAL STYLE PRESENTED BY AAA (Page xiv) (5th paragraph)

Additionally Requirements and specifications for Street Legal are the same as
those for the Summit Racing Series with the following exception: Unaltered 2008
OEM model year and newer production cars running slower than 9.99 and 135
mph do not have to meet the requirements and specifications for the Summit
Racing Series except for the following: Convertibles and T-tops must meet
Summit Racing Series Roll Bar and Roll Cage requirements, All drivers must
meet the Summit Racing Series Helmet and Protective Clothing requirements.”

i realize that this is being addressed as newer cars are becoming faster right from the factory then they used to, however i feel that they should still be required to meet the safety rules of the rest of the cars…but thats just me.

So when we get a local NHRA track and someone has a 2008 or newer fast car they will be all set

Those roll bar requirements were pre many of the safety features current cars have.

That’s pretty sweet!

Even though I’d prefer to not have my roll bar since its a street car, the stiffness it’s added to my car is great for the track

Roll bars are cool and all but they’re not designed for street cars and people driving around with out helmets.

It would suck to get seriously injured in a small accident on the street because of a roll bar.

Cool. Or just go to Lucky’s, lol.

This is true… They are more dangerous on the street than anything. A guy on another forum got killed a couple months ago from a minor accident in his Camaro. This is one of the things that is holding me back from a 25.5… Just way too much going on for the street that could kill me instead of help.

25.5 cage on the street is scarey I heard about that guy on the bullet. That was sad

I’m very hesitant to put a cage in mine even though i would really like to track it more… hmmm.

Love this but I can only think of a hand full of cars that’s this applies to.

what happened to the guy on yellowbullet? im assuming he hit his head on the cage or something? i dont frequent there much…

i went full cage on my s10 but im running race seats with the padded wings for your head that the circle track guys run so im not concerned…

Embed it in the A/B pillar and roof; it’ll give you some more safety/room to move around. Not sure if it’s IHRA/NHRA legal, and it costs some more $$; but I’ve seen a few cars with it done, and it’s really slick.

I think a lot of the shit that ends up on forums is “hey guys I put a roll bar in with stock seat belts.” and then something happening on the street.

Having proper seats and a harness really limits your movement anyways.

A guy had a 25.5 cage with the funny car bars that goes around the drivers head. He took the car for a lap around his shop after fixing something on the camaro, someone ran a stop sign at like 30 mph, and his head bounced off the funny car hoop and he died from brain damage a few days later.

No one around here has a cage like that that they drive on the street with

Like these

I agree, it makes me nervous.

The other thing here is cheap aftermarket seats failing or racing seats on a street car that are not braced properly those failing and you smashing a roll bar.

All kinds of fun shit to fuck you up lol

I’m glad they did this. I was just thinking the other day why there were no rule updates for newer cars.

TMP in Cayuga switched to NHRA 2 yrs ago.

Roll bars r required to have padding anywhere ur head can possibly come in contact with(don’t know how that’s done w/a funny cage). Having a 5 pt harness is the way to go, ur upper can’t move at all.
