Can someone copy and paste the article? Or at least give the headline for it? The URL has changed so the link in the OP is no longer valid.

I’m going to get plates that say NYS FTL

ALBANY, N.Y. – Scott Sullivan of Albany said, “License plates don’t really bother me too much.”
You may not think about them much.

“As long as it’s legible there should be no reason to turn it in,” Sullivan continued. “It’s kind of sad really.”

But your license plates will cost you. Beginning in April when you renew your vehicle registration, you’ll need to purchase a new set.

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola said, “Every single car, every single truck out there will pay the $25 one-time fee. If you opt to keep the same plate number, you’ll see a one-time fee of an additional $20 - so upwards of $45.”

It stems from a little-noticed provision in the recently passed state budget driving out the current design that lasted nine years, a short run compared to the liberty plates that lasted for 15.

“Those plates were in rough shape,” said Merola. “They had to go.”

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola - who oversees the county DMV - said he and other county clerks may start a state-wide petition fighting the change. He said the new plates were made with better materials than the last design, so there’s no need to toss them.

“You look at any plates today, they look brand new,” said Merola. “They haven’t deteriorated at all.”

And that $25 fee is much higher than the $5.50 charged during the last license plate shift. And this time it comes with even more charges. This September, there’s a 25-percent increase in your registration fee. And renewing your license is going from $50 to $64.50, commercial licenses will be up to $180, up from about $134.

You have no option," said Merola. “After a certain period of time, it will actually be tied into your registration fee, so if you process a renewal or registration, it’s got to be in there.”

Governor Paterson’s office told us the measure could make the state nearly $130 million, which they argue is important to keep government programs running during these tough budget times.

“It might be ridiculous to some people, but I think it’s ignorant basically,” said Sullivan. “It’s trying to find working class people to pay out more money they don’t have already.”

While it may raise cash, critics say given the economy most folks have enough on their plate, calling it a new form of road outrage as the measure goes into effect on - of all days - April Fool’s Day 2010.

what are these plates gonna look like? and i’m keeping one of my current custom plates.

sweet another plate for me to cut and fold

still a hell of a lot cheaper than NC for registration. for my 07 Civic Si i was going to pay $200 a year for registration…

and you are not going to pay this fee until your next registration is due…

“Beginning in April when you renew your vehicle registration, you’ll need to purchase a new set.”

ill renew mine at the end of march…LOL

you dont have to pay this until it is TIME to renew. for my gf who just renewed this month, she has another two years until she needs new plates…this was the case 9 years ago as well…

Its retarded:retardclap, the plates are perfectly fine, there is no need for new plates at all, its just another way for NYS to rape people in the ass without the lube (sorry lol) Here is yet another fine reason why NYS SUCKS !!! I HATE NY with a passion, glad I will no longer be funding NYS bs antics anymore soon.

Maybe they’ll make the plates sooooo badass, that everyone will want them on their car. Then I won’t have to hear people bitching about their front plates anymore…

I sure hope thats the case!
