New Shop

Depends on the person’s credit and who you are buying from. Anywhere from 9.9% to 24.9%.

Thats what I thought. I’ll keep comments to myself.

Do yourself a favor and buy a set of metric ratcheting wrenches with a flex head. A BFH and a big 1/2" breaker bar is a must along with some kind of decent torque wrench. An HF clicker type torque wrench is actually very good for the money, I believe they are accurate to 5% or so. Not bad for most uses, but I wouldnt use it on rod bolts for instance. The cheap digital multimeters at HF are good for troubleshooting. I hate HF wrenches and screwdrivers and most of their sockets. For hondas, 12pt sockets are rarely needed, The only 12pt sockets i can think you might need are for the flywheel bolts and pressure plate bolts. Thats it.

So thats:
HF clicker tq wrench
Vise Grips (HF ones suck)
Big Channellock pliers
Lineman Pliers
Needlenose pliers
Craftsman Screwdrivers (good for the money)
Flex ratcheting wrenches
Breaker bar
Pry Bar
HF Multimeter
Jack Stands
Jack
oil drain pan
BFH
Work bench
Vise
Cherry Picker

Down the road I would look at getting a 3/8" VSR corded drill, possibly a tap and die set, some assorted drill bits and 4.5" angle grinder (avoid HF grinders they DONT LAST)

FYI: The craftsman aluminum jack is junk. Avoid it at all cost.

This is coming up!

Not going to happen, I just had to buy all the appliances for the new place. I’m trying to buy what I “need”… Then I can buy as I go.

Thanks for all the in put guys

craigslist!

i love the us general box i got from hb… the only thing i bought from them that hasnt broke that i use alot is the cut off wheel. other then that i stay away from their tools. the mac and snap on trucks are my friends…

i have a racing hf jack or whatever, i jacked my car up wrong and the jack tipped it and bent it so it doesnt full “put away” now, but it still jacks up fine. and i bought the warranty anyways for like 12bucks so it doesnt matter.

i also have harbor freight jackstands, which have been fine for the 3 years ive owned them.

im pretty sure all of my tools are husky ones from home depot. all sockets, breaker bar, torque wrench, extensions… get a set of dikes, lineman pliers, whatever other pliers you need. (husky makes a nice small set and it was only like 22bucks and is a 5pc set i believe), they also make nice ratcheting wrenches

however their ratchets that you put sockets on (whatever theyre called) i dont really like and use my dads older set of craftsman ones whenever i need them

i would definately get an air compressor and some power tools. although its not the greatest or most powerful … i bought a husky 3in1 power tools set thing that has a impact gun (only 250ft lbs meh) , a power wrench thing (only 45ft lbs ) (its SO much easier than using ratchets i would highly suggest getting one, its made me lazy though lol) and it also came with a grinding stone thing, which i thought i would never use but ive actually used it about 5 times so far. and the kit was under 50bucks!

i have no idea how much ive spent on tools but i pretty much have everything you would need and im sure i spent well under 1000$
i just dont have any tool chests yet, those are next on my list

thought on aircompressors: my compressor is the size of a small ship and I have just about every attatchment for it. 99% of its use (on a car) is JUST for taking wheels off. Almost never do I use it for anything else car related. The fact is the the air ratchet doesnt fit in most of the places around the engine AND you have little control of the torque.(this means rounding out bolts or shearing them right off). I still use it heavily between the sandblaster, plasma cutter and fabrication usage, but for a small shop (in my opinion) its money not well spent.

I pay no interest with my truck credit and I can go to 5k…

I use craftsman sockets. I also have a craftsman 44 gallon air compressor. All my other tools. pullers, ratchets, air tools, flaring tools, and a ton of other tools. i have a dewalt electric impact that I primarily use correctly. It was around 200 has removed deverything on mine and cougarspeeds car

The same thing happened to me when i was jacking up my SVX. Luckily i did it pretty quick after i bought the jack and just returned it for a new one…it was def my fault though.

Ive also been using jack stands from big lots + autozone for 6 years and havent had any problems with them - or ever felt like they were gonna fail. And ive stored cars on them for months, and have used them for my SVX (3800lb curb weight) and then ive climbed in it (im huge…) with it on the stands to start it when i had to redo the exhaust.

as for tools - ive bought kits from EVERYWHERE. i have duralast stuff, a 150(?) peice craftsman set, hf tourqe wrenches/impact sockets/misc tools, Channel-lock ratchet wrenches, a 50-peice set of whatever tools Pepboys sells, and an engine hoist from AdvanceAutoParts…

And probably the only tools ive used that havent broken were my dads…he bought the Husky 150peice black chrome set…its 150$ but for what it comes with - id say its a more complete kit then a comparable craftsman one.

Ill pretty much buy any tools as long as it has a lifetime warranty on it. Ive broken more craftsman ratchets, and stripped the plating off of more craftsman sockets then ive broken any other tools - but its just really easy to take it into any sears and get a new one that it doesnt bother me.

No one pays interest on tool truck credit. I was speaking of financing through the company. Plus, if you had 5k on the truck you wouldn’t be paying $30/week. It would be far more than that.

If you can go to 5k on the truck, then you must be a very trustworthy person.

If you’re on a budget, shop craigslist. Used tools can be found super cheap.

I’d also drop the Air Compressor, you CAN do just about everything by hand, and a GOOD compressor is going to eat a lot of that budget before you even get to tools.

Tools are probably some of the most pawned items, might want to look into that.

My Craftsman jack leaked after six years. I need to get another one. I was thinking about going HF. Not sure yet.

I also have some HF jackstands…the 3 ton stands are built better than my Craftsman ones I got with the Jack and Stands combo for $100. I think one set of stands from HF was about $15. I had my 94 F-150 on them without a problem.

Go look at them and decide. You have a great mechanical understanding.

Floor jack - Again, unsure. The Craftsman one I have is shot after 6 years.
Jack stands - HF seems to work just fine.
Crane - ???. If you are not lifting a monster longblock pretty much anything will work.
Air compressor - ???. I have a Craftsman 33 gal. Works fine.
Tool box - Craftsman has a great selection
Work bench - Would build. 72" x 36" is going to be a good size.
Vice - Get a 4" jaw. You will be glad you did.

my advice is buy cheap at HF then upgrade with used deal of expensive stuff from ebay and then use the HF as backup.

you’d be amazed at the deals on high end tools that show up on craigslist, ebay, pawn shops. Don’t but your expensive tools from the truck, buy them from ebay from the guy who got them from the truck.

i have craftsman jack and jackstands. most of my tools are craftsman, some husky wrenches which i love(smooth handle instead of sharp edges on craftsman, also slightly longer). some stanley screwdrivers. dont skimp on airtools if you pick those up. i have a snapon box but i bought it used from my uncle. went for 8k new i got it for 1400. you can build your own bench, and alot of mallets and your minisledges and such you could probably find at estate sales. i have ALOT of tools especially for not being a mechanic by trade, but i dont have much into them

this. at my uncles he only has a baby 5-10 gallon compressor. its not worth listening to it run all the time to save a few mins.

With harbor freight stuff, you just gotta have the intuition to know what will be good and what will be garbage. lol
Things like the impact sockets have been such a great purchase for me.
I’ve used the jack stands with great success as well. But things like their vice grips I wouldn’t buy type of deal.

Check out blue point on ebay as well. They have awesome 3/8 and 1/4 boxed kits.

I think you are right, I am going to wait on a compressor for now.

Pawn stars!

I really like the Craftsman work stations… but they start at 200. At first I was thinking of building my own bench but I like the idea that a craftsman would come apart. I guess I could use bolts but I dont have a saw.

I agree! This is on the back burner

Doesn’t Snap-On own Blue point?

A floor jack is going to be one of the first tools I buy… So who makes the best one? I like the idea of the Aluminum “race” jacks but I would choose quality over weight.

Yes. It’s their opening price point, primarily overseas made brand.
