Yes, check craigslist. I just got a box of random sockets, a 1/2" 100 lbs torque wrench, a drill, 6 3 ton jack stands, tile cutter, chalk line, square, and a bunch of small hand tools and random items for $30 on craigslist.
Also watch Sears on black friday. Join the Craftsman club too. I was able to get the Jack, creeper and jackstands kit for $75 on the wednesday before thanksgiving because I was a member. Saved me from having to go out on black friday. My brother told me about this when he worked there last year.
Harbor freight is your friend. Let the haters hate. I use all snap-on shit at swerve, and a lot of HF shit at my place. I must say, yes there is a difference, but not as much as people make it out to be. Experience saves my ass more than better tools. And for Craftsman, fuck craftsman. Most of that shit is garbage and I’ll use HF shit over it any day. I use a ton of HF impact shit and haven’t broken a single socket(their old line they carried I busted almost all of them). If you want middle of the road shit, hop on tooltopia and start picking up some sunex handtools. As for wrenchs, gearwrench. In my experience I’ve busted more snap-on ratchets than gearwrench. Impact guns: I use 3 different ones, snap-on, IR, and HF earthquake gun. For regular use, I prefer the HF one over the other two because of setting switch built into the gun. Power wise, the snap-on wins hands down, but the damn earthquake gun does about the same as my IR gun. HF pliers do pretty much suck dick though.
Got all moved, time to get unpacked and back to it - Here’s the new shop (before I moved in)
Things are going well, I picked up some tools during black Friday and internet Monday. Then I also did well for Christmas. I’ll have to update this when I get the camera unpacked!
Looking into a air compressor? What’s the best bang for my buck? I know I want 30gals plus so its not kicking on all the time but what do I want as far as horse power and CFM’s?
Home depot (huskey brand) air compressor is a pretty good deal.I have a 60 gallon that pretty much will run anything .I think it was around $425.Anything less than a 60 gallon it pretty useless. It wont keep up with any real air tools(Da,air board, impact guns)anything that uses alot of cfm.
I say invest some of that tool budget in drugs, nice strong good drugs. That way, when you spend all day fixing some piece of shit car, and then something else goes wrong with it, you can snort yourself to the point that you no longer care. A nuse would also be a good investment.
Lately I have come to utterly despise working on cars. I have also grown to HATE all cars. I’m not a drinker but lately I’m starting to think it is something I might want to take up due to my complete hatred of working on cars.
Shut the fuck up Jam, I’ll come over to your house and piss on your rising sun hood
Find an open box one and then grab the veterans discount. Sobo was with me when I was harassing the shit out of the manager for mine. Needed a power cord(I made one for a few bux) I think I srsly paid like $250 for it brand new haha.
Ok yea, I was like “is he calling my cars junk and telling me to hang myself lol”… After my last fail I really wanted to give up but at the end of the day I like the hobby to much and some day when I get to the track again I know it will be all worth it.
I’m looking, hopefully find a good deal some time soon. I don’t NEED one right away but it would be used if I did.
pix!
Jegs 3-ton stands
HF U.S. General 4,000lb jack, seams to work well! Paid 120 with a $70 off coupon
HF 13 drawer US General roller. I love this, after a month of shopping, E-bay, Sears ect. I found this. Got it for 349 with a $250 off coupon. picked it up to save on shipping.
Picked this up lastnight, on sale for 199 reg. 300
Cheap set - paid 20
Shrek parts not unpacked yet. New Sears 8 foot work bench. Paid 180
When you buy a compressor make sure its not the single stage type. Make sure it has a seperate motor/pump the single (i think they call them oil less ones) are so fucking loud/noisey. i have one in a 60 gal version that i use i wish i didnt, kills my ears
for the common tools like ratchets etc you can get away with craftsman , but when it comes to tap and dies and specialty tools you really get what you pay for… and generally your only using those when something fucks up so you want them to perform and not make a job harder (like a tap breaking off inside of something)
I was told that. So I want a 30 plus gal. two stage, whats CFM should I be looking for? I dont want to cheap out on this but I might just have to for now.
Yea Id say that tap and die set is pretty cheapo, thought it was a good deal at the time but after shopping around I could have got a real nice set for a few bucks more.
Pick up some of those Bbolt out things that you pound on to a spun nut/bolt head to get it loosened. By far the most valuable tool set when working on rusted out piece of shit WNY cars. They are pricey for the number you get in a set but they are SO awesome to have when you need them.
Also, would I be able to come over to your new shop and lay under that WRX and then have you push it off the jackstands and crush me? It’s been that kind of week and it is only Tuesday
