when i say an old man had this im not kidding…guy was 62 yrs old bought it in 2000 last registered it in 07…so in 7 yrs he put 1700 miles on it, 242 miles a year…2 tanks of gas…
2000 a/c zl 550 l/c elec start, reverse, studded track, 1,700 miles…hasnt been ran in 2 years so i ripped the carbs apart…found an acorn holding one of the sliders open…alot of the nickle has been chipped off the sliders so i ordered new ones 40$ a piece…jets were shot so i ordered new ones, needles were ok so i reused those…kind of a headache but it should hammer when im done…gonna kep the stock clutches for now, replace the carbides b/c those are borderline…new parts should be here this week hopefully tues…sorry about the shitty pics they were from my cellphone…
Looks like a good sled. Those 550’s are just about bulletproof. They definetly screwed up when they went to the 580.
I’ve been pretty happy with my ZR chassis, which is just about identical to the ZL. As always I would sugest changing you chaincase oil and injection oil. Chaincase is a must, especially if it has been sitting. Injection oil isn’t a ‘must’, but I always do it to be on the safeside.
Once you get it going check to see if the speedo works. A regular service item on the Z’s is driveshaft bearings. I’ve seen originals last from 2000 to 3500 miles. A definte sign that they need to be replaced is your speedo won’t work.
Let me know if your going to do a clutch kit. Some of the off the shelf kits have a shitty engegment rpm and/or horrible secondary ramp. When you get it running post up what your engagement rpm is, and a pic of your primary clutch looking at the spring.
Haha, there’s something about a Z chassis that make peoples fingers tighten. They never want to let them go till after they’ve been wadded into a tree.
yeah the zl 440 i have i love…4900 miles and still going strong…put 110 1"3/4 studs in it ,fuckin thing hooks…got 144 used studs for 20$…used 110 of em still got a few left somewhere
fuck yeah…and when i say an old man had it, no lie, hes like 60+ sumthing, the guy rode it up to summit(always groomed trails) he has a bad back so he only rode 34 mph tops
