Niagara Gorge......

Took the girl and went to the gorge this saturday. Was a good time. Liek the fact you can actually hike down to the water. Took some pics with the 70-300mm lens. I did not have a tripod and the lens is not VR. I thought the pics are decent under the circumstances.

wow considering you didn’t have a tripod

That’s one of my favorite areas in WNY. Every time I take the boat to the lower I start the day with a quick run up to devils hole. The shot between the two power project discharges usually gets some wide eyes from passengers, but it’s not that bad if you know what you’re doing. Throttling down under the Queenston/Lewiston bridge and going “backwards” when the boat’s speedometer is reading 10+ is pretty cool too. LOTS of current down there.

Hiking down at devil’s hole is pretty rad. Some of the trails are pretty hairy.

thw whirlpool jetboat ride looks fun as hell

You take your boat to devil’s hole? You need some serious power to get past those rapids…kinda dangerous dont you think?

It’s amazing! I took that ride three times and can’t wait to do it again.

devils hole prolly isnt too bad. I was there once, and if i can remember, I saw lots of fishing boats. Although its hard to remember.

Now the Whirlpool. thats downright dangerous.

+1 … next time you go ask the driver how much power that thing puts out… siq

I think you’re confusing devils hole with the whirlpool. Devils hole is the area just past the American side power project discharge. Other than having to make a little zig-zag to get between the whitewater from the two discharges it’s not bad at all if you’re comfortable with your boat.

The whirlpool on the other hand, that’s 100% crazy in anything but a jet boat. I’ve only known one person to go all the way up there, and he did it in his 5.0 V8 powered 19 foot bowrider. He only did it once, and said he’d NEVER do it again. This same guy has taken an intertube and ridden from the Maid of the mist launch all the way to Lewiston, to give you an idea of his “1-10 crazy scale”. He said from the whirlpool to Lewiston is fun, and he’s done that lots of times, but that he almost died several times on the one trip he did from the Maid of the Mist to the whirlpool.

I watched something on tv about NF and the whirlpool. the jet boat is only 1 of a few that are certified to run in those water conditions. They also said its capable of turning 180 degrees at full speed! cant wait to go on it!!

its awesome, make sure you do the canadian tour though thats the open air boat so you get nice and wet. The U.S. tour is enclosed and not as fun.

The rapids are CRAZY on that part of the river. On the tour, they mentioned that if you were to fall off, even with a life vest, you would be sucked below the surface. Devils hole is around 200ft deep with ridiculous current. We should get some people together and do this. I want to take my girl…maybe on the weekend? Would be fun to get a group to go.

there was some videos of some guys riding jetskis in some pretty hairy rapids in the lower niagara… nuts.

i wonder if it was the guy i used to work with at my old job. Him and his friends were always doing stupid shit on their jetskis and talked about going up into the rapids.

Not ture, i took it last year and got plenty soaked

I seen jetskis there last summer when I took the ride on the jet boat. They got pretty damn close to those huge rapids. Thats plain stupid and risky IMHO

They have both…enclosed and open. Open is whhhaaaayyyy fun…$38 per person, leaves from Lewiston hotel.

you’re starting to get some good photos marcus…

my contributing view of the gorge. (with cell phone obviously)

will be adding more tonight as i was down there sat night for a while also

if anyone really wants to go, i’ve climbed up and down the cables many times, day and night…i can guide down there, i know all the good spots to hang out at, and all the spots where you can actually get into the water without risking being carried away by current

p.s. the stairs are for wimps :stuck_out_tongue:
