large items on flat panels might have been mashed, but after the masking was removed im sure that all the edges were then retouched for continuity with the purely airbrushed sections
if you spent that much $ on airbushing, would you be content with having sections that were obviously masked off, leaving hard edges ?
im sure alot of the stuff was done with complex posterboard patterns (like airbrushers will sometimes use for skulls and the like) or with simple posterboard patterns, like are often used for the “realistic flames” paintjobs, these are usualy just a decent sized chunk of posterboard cut into random shapes (curved, notched, pointy, perfectly round, ect)
