Nitrogen filled tires question

well yes and no… it’s nice for track cars because the pressure stays a lot more consistent. but for 99% of people it’s a scam.

I’ve crewed for a guy using nitrogen filled tires. Pressures rose just like normal air. Probably just mounted and filled.

One method I have seen is mount, then collapse tire with ratchet strap to purge then fill with nitrogen.

Anyways, my question is what is the advantage of nitrogen vs. air with a really good (say refrigerant + desiccant + I should have paid more attention during that SMC seminar) dryer system?

The only advantages I can think of for dry nitrogen vs dry air is the bigger molecules :cjerk: and marketability.

We use nitrogen in the struts, and tires at the AFB. as for reasoning of why, i’m not entirely sure.

AWD Drifter was right. Nitrogen charged shocks rarely foam up due to heavy abuse. As far as the tires I heard somewhere that nitrogen is less likely to expand at altitude. However the 2 grams of common sense i have left tend to steer me clear of that theory.

IIRC an oxygen molecule is 3 angstroms “square” whereas a nitrogen molecule is 4.3 angstroms by 3 angstroms, hence it’s not supposed to permeate through the rubber as fast as oxygen. In theory.

For a street car, filling the tires with nitrogen at a tire shop is horse shit IMHO. You’re starting with 78% nitrogen. Going up higher via grease monkey tire shop technique isn’t going to net you much of an increase.

HOWEVER

Any nitrogen production technique I know of will dry the living hell out of it (well south of -50*F dewpoints), which is good because a lot of the expansion from heating a tire is caused by the water vapor in the air in your tire.

All that being said, you will never see me pay to put nitrogen in my tires.

Although I am tempted to slap together a PSA nitrogen generator and offer nitrogen filling services at tracks days and autocrosses, where it actually could make a difference. Hmm…

The GTR tires may be aired up with nitrogen but they only have 1 valve stem, they do not purge them of the contaminated air before putting the nitrogen in (the correct way). So as with most things GTR related, it’s just marketing for idiots.

Nitrogens are bigger than oxygens. Oxygens can squeeze through teeny tiny holes that nitrogens can’t fit through.
