This theory will try to explain the consistent back up of traffic on NYS Thruway eastbound between exit 25-24. There are 2 variables, and one constant; Variable 1 Time of day, Variable 2 amount of traffic. Constant 1 retarded drivers.
This is very simple. The constant fluctuations in speeds between the lead car and the following car. For example, you are the first car in a lane. The lead car. For what ever reason you hit your brakes and slow down slightly. The car behind you, probably following too close for their comfort, slows down too, but to a greater extent. Now the car behind him sees the brake lights, but may be far enough behind to be immediately involved in the situation, hits their brakes as well, to be safe or what ever the case is. At this time, three cars have just slowed down, one after the other. By the time the third car slowed, the lead car realized that there was no reason to slow down and they speed back up. Now the second car does so as well, and the third car does so. But wait… there is a car in the far left lane driving too slow. Now the lead car must slow down again. Now repeat your process. Take your data points for Variable 1 and multiply them by Variable 2, divide by number of lanes and multiply again by Constant 1. You will now begin to see the oscillation.
For those of you how cant follow the math try this example. Stretch out a Slinky on the floor with match box cars glued to a coil on the Slinky every foot or so. Pull the lead car in the slinky and stop it. You will now see exactly how traffic flows on NYS Thruways during rush hour!

Okay, I was an hour and a half late for work because of this… and im sure this is the same shit you saw
I get on exit 25A, not even a mile and a half up, stop n go traffic till about half a mile to a mile after exit 25… To see that the reason traffic is so fucked is because of 2 old guys in a fender bender… srsly? Then another ways up, theres a Toyota Corolla maybe, with its engine half way thru the firewall, and the saturn he rear ended dident have anything but a scuff lol… but the toyota looked like he hit him at at least 50+mph…
Then not even a mile up, some jackass kid on top of a 7ft snowbank… HOW THE FUCK do you get a tiny car like that on top of a snowbank? Seriously that takes some fucking work… Its not like I90 has these 90 degree bends out of nowhere and your like ZOMG 90 DEGREE BEND OMG UNDERSTEEER OMG 7 FT SNOWBANk…
THe only thing that made being an hour and a half late was seeing this goofy dumbfuck of a kid on top of a 7foot snowbank and looking like he has no idea what just happend or what to do.
Might I add, he dient run up on the snowbank, it looks like someone gently placed it on top of a 7ft mountain of ice…
it literaly turned my 25 minute ride into a fucking 2 hour fiasco… now i dono what the fucking problem is with some drivers but if i can manage to drive mustang with z rated tires in the fucking snow and ice without dieing crashing or slowing down other people…then either these other people are that fucking stupid or im that fucking good of a driver lol :crackup, the best part is by the time i got to where these issues were there was no issue on the road other then the fact that it was all residual traffic more then likely from all the assholes who have to slow down and look…
one of my co-workers calls me at like 8 am and hes like “ive been moving 2mph on the thruway for an hour now. do u know whats happening?”
5 minutes later he calls me back and says “nevermind. theres 4 cars sitting UP on the snowbank. like ONTOP OF IT several feet up on it”
morning routine for a lot of people here is as follows
step 1: detach brainstem from brain
step 2: remove brain from skull and place in a keepsake box at home in a dusty closet
step 3: DRIVE
I dont understand why you guys saw so many accidents today. It wasnt snowing or anything.
My ride to work started about 4:25 am and I went from exit 8 of 890 to exit 25 of the thruway to 24 and then to exit 9 of the northway and it was incident free. So was the ride to exit 23 of the northway starting a little after 5.
It has everything to do with that single constant…idiot drivers. To an almost unlimited extent, it doesn’t matter what time of the day it is or how much traffic. If everyone just drove like they should, knew how the fuck to merge into traffic, and let people in a timely manner to/from exit ramps traffic would flow exponentially smoother than it does now. Wouldn’t be perfect, but sure as hell wouldn’t be as bad as it is now.
well you see what happens is around november as the weather gets cooler and the snow actually starts to accumilate people tend to loose IQ points… and i mean this is the most blunt way… people see the change of climate as a shock apparently because people loose their fucking common sense come winter time… and then again come spring… its like some sort of bewitching or somthing… people in cars that shouldnt be drivin over 80 during the summer let alone during the winter decide to do mach1 in a fucking blizard then wonder why they end up on top of a god damn snowbank… people really do loose iq points when the seasons change…

THe one beamer was from flordia, he spun out on the turn getting onto 87N off 24… i stopped asked if he was okay and said “This isnt flordia man you gotta slow the fuck down” and took off
