Old School Rap/Hip Hop Thread

I know there used to be something like this but when I searched I got nothing.

I’ve been hooked on this genre for about a year now and im sure anyone else who enjoys it could benefit from other people’s picks.

so here goes, share your favorite songs from the late 80’s / early 90’s:

mine:

Wu tang clan - Gravel pit (not that old but im loving it right now)

fearless four - rockin it
rodney o and joe cooley - but you don’t hear me tho
run dmc - its like that
erik b and rakim - microphone fiend
erik b and rakim - dont sweat the technique
esham - the wicket shit
epmd - crossover
treacherous three - new rap language
geto boys - bring it on
boogie down productions - jack of spades
kurtis blow - if i ruled the world
ll cool j - rock the bells
gangstarr - words i manifest
poor righteous teachers - rock this funky joint
public enemy - welcome to the terrordome
dr dre ft ice cube - natural born killaz

ill add more later

Beastie boys - high plains drifter
Gangstarr - just to get a rep
Diamond D - (any song)
DJ Honda & Mos Def - travalin man
young black teenagers - tap the bottle
Sir-Mix-Alot - somthin bout my benzo

a tribe called quest- whats the scenario

I’ve barely heard of any of those. What the hell was I listening to when I was 10?

DJ Ouik - Tonight
The DOC - The formula

just to get a rep might be the best old school hip hop song ever

Glad I wasn’t around for all this crap.

im only 20 now so I cant really comment but I would assume that few or none of these songs were mainstream enough to get any radio play

Crap is the GARBAGE that has been mainstream for at least the last 10 years

agreed

sugar hill gang-rappers delight (orignal rap, not that crap they play now)
Run DMC- jam master jay
public enema-fight the power

lemmie guess u like lil wayne?

Lil Wayne has the lyrics but lacks the beats

NWA (straight outta compton album)
Ice Cube - Death Certificate album

surprised nobody said Slick Rick

I love the public “enema” … i hope that was a reference to “house Party”

lol yep

“I did’nt pay no god damn $25,000 to sit here and listen to no god damn public enema”

Actually I’m not really a fan of any new music. Real music happened pre-1980. The 80’s did have some decent music, give or take. The 90’s showed some progress with alternative rock. But after the new millennium, more and more bands have been playing to attract the majority. I’m also unbiased in music, with the exception of cuntry.

Been there, done that with two 12’’ subs slamming, plastic vibrating. Here and there rap, but more-so “bassier” rock. Tool, Cake, LZ. The Grey Album was a good mix. There is good rap, but I just don’t understand it. I can’t relate.

I can stand radio, but rather have my own playlist.

THE VIDEO IS SO FUTURISTIC

Illmatic is a MUST listen.
