Why is there 4 threads with iPhone in the title?:gotme:
Can we sticky a legit one with apps and updates?
My Review (continually updated):
iPhone Pro’s:
-
Amazing software base that includes free apps, games, and tools to install over the air. Also includes some very decent apps that have to be paid for.
-
Full web browser. You pay for the web and 3G internet, see the full web pages and not just a formatted version
iPhone Con’s:
-
SMS vibrate only very short pulse which is hard to feel. (Hopefully a third-party jailbreak app fixes this like on the first iPhone)
-
Limited lock screen information. Only missed call and sms notifications. Mail would be nice. (Wont be changed with a legit app either due to the Apple SDK rules)
Recommended Applications:
Jailbreak 2.0 is great. Still limited apps in the Cydia repository but provides future development and continually adding apps daily. Also, you have the ability to ssh to your phone and put on cracked applications.
I currently have working full versions of:
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe
Nitro Kart 3D
Hold-em
300 Bowl
Tetris
Break
eWallet
Putt Putt
Bomberman
Cydia Applications:
Customize - allows modifying of theses using internal repository of applications
OpenSSH - allows SSH access to your phone and filesystem using Putty and WinSCP
Mobile Terminal - Allows commands to be run on the phone that use the Unix filesystem
MiVTones - Plays iPod formatted video when a call comes in
Lockdown - Password protects certain applications
CameraRollSwap - Have 2 camera rolls that are interchangable (good for hiding certain pictures from someone playing with your iPhone)
IntelliScreen - Adds info to your lock screen. Has a free 10 day trial but requires a pay license for use after.
Desktop Applications
WinPwn - http://winpwn.com
Simple method for jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod Touch. Locates firmware file, patches, puts on your iPhone/iPod
iPhone Ringtone Maker - http://www.efksoft.com/products/iphoneringtonemaker/index.htm
Very great tool for making ringtones off your own MP3s. Select the file, trim, and it exports to iTunes so you can sync with your iPhone. Only $7.50 (totally worth it since Apple charges $.99 to $2.00 per song) but cracked version is available in the typical sources.
News:
2.0.1 Firmware:
Changes are still unknown (Typical with any Apple release however reported changes are faster keyboard and contact browsing and also better 3G network reception and recovery when it fades between a low 3G and high EDGE network. Safari and other applications are reporting better stability and no more random crashes that take down the whole iPhone. I suggest you wait till 2.1 comes out or 2.0.1 is jailbroken.
WinPWN does not work with 2.0.1 yet. If you are jailbroken, stay jailbroken and do not update until updates are released for WinPWN.
F.A.Q.
*What is the difference between jailbreak and unlock?
Unlock refers to a GSM based phone being unlocked on hte hardware end and allowing it to be used on a range of other GSM networks. For example: a unlocked ATT phone can be used on a T-Mobile plan and vice versa. In theory you can unlock any GSM phone. Jailbreak refers to the software on the phone itself and the restrictions on that specific software. Jailbreak was a term used on the first iPhone hack that allowed third party applications to be installed on it. Only the iPhone can be jailbroken
How much is the iPhone
If you are eligible for an upgrade, it is $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. You can still buy the iPhone without being eligible, however you will be required to pay an additional $200 for the phone. This will not create extend your hardware contract to receive discount pricing in the future. With either phone, you will be required to pay an additional $30 a month for data on top of your voice plan plus the a text messaging plan you choose.
Why do I want the 3G over the original phone?
Because its the coolest device to have and will get you more friends. Actually, no. The phone does have the the ability to use the fast 3G network which provides downloads around 1MBps. With this brings better call quality than the original iPhone and GPS ability. This phone also has games that take advantage of the 3D power of it and is quite an amazing phone.
Can I teather my iPhone to my laptop?
Standard answer: No. The iPhone has no way of doing this by default.
Jailbroken answer: Yes. You can create an Ad-Hoc wireless network between your laptop and iPhone and tunnel everything through SSH. The instructions for the Mac are here but you can do it in Windows too: http://cre.ations.net/blog/post/tether-your-iphone
