You are basing your argument on impact towards the US. Don’t forget that the Jewish/Muslim confrontation has been going on since Biblical times. Just because their was no ‘globalized’ open terrorism (per se, on the scale we see now towards the US) doesn’t mean that it wasn’t taking place on a large scale back in the 70s and 80s in other locations. Also keep in mind that ‘terrorism’ as the term is defined now, has also been described by other terms in the past. Established countries can commit acts of terrorism just as easily as splintered radical faction groups. How many countries actually try to follow the Geneva Convention or any other “Rules of War” and stay away from purposely attacking civilians?

I wasn’t basing my argument on its relation to the US per se, and perhaps the way I worded it misconstrued that. What I am getting at is my original point that at no point in our past was the world as at risk for a larger-than-9-11 scale terrorist attack on civilians, one that could be nuclear. A first strike on Iran would undoubtedly increase this risk.
Israel going after Iraq in the 80s would have had relatively little chance of provoking such a large attack, whereas today an attack on Iran as mentioned in my opinion has a fairly good chance of doing so. The reason I mention the US, is that because any action that Israel takes is considered an action by the US by the majority of Muslim extremists, and retaliation for an Israeli strike would be aimed here as well. Any such attacks on the US would surely result in an increased presence in the Middle East at minimum, or more likely war with Iran, which could really spin the entire region (if not world) out of control.

I think that entire region is already out of control. Just hoping that if WW III starts it starts after I’m old and dead. The way it’s shaping up now, it will be US and 3 or 4 allies versus the rest of the world that hates the US.
