im looking into buying a 97 talon tsi with “7k+” in parts. it has aftermarket almost everything 120k miles but was rebuilt 1,000 miles ago with no reciepts showing the build. he traded his truck fot it from a guy in Vergina, and has no contact with him.the owner is a middle aged male and is asking about $8,000 for his car or 2,000 with a trade on my car.also this car is not on the road and has been sitting in his gerage since november.and from what i know performance modds to a car doesnt increase the value of the car. what should i tell him?
You suck
awesome.
you realize your astounding lack of information/knowledge prevents anyone from giving you a response that is even remotely useful?
This, is an example of what NOT to do in gen auto.
This, is much closer to an acceptable response to a horribly asked question.
Now to try an help you… as best as I can.

Show us the for sale ad, We’ll need some more information.

when posting on a forum try and make your question as clear as possible to get a good response. i.e. spelling, grammar, punctuation, spaces, etc, The clearer you are and easier it is to read for us the better response you’ll get.

what kind of car are you trading?
there is no add for it the guy called me. and i know i cant spell for shit. he wants my 94 3000gt sl.the only info i can give anyone is what he told me greddy turbo kit, no brand name rims(15"s) aftermarket suspention. he doesnt know what kind. and some kind of performance clutch. like i said the guy has no clue about cars, and has no clue what is in it. he doesnt drive it and its sitting in his gerage
pass on it
I know it might be exciting to you to trade your car and maybe get something cool and modded. However, there is no telling what the real condition of the car is, and what the extent of the mods are. Also, motor builds have to so many variables to them, that if you don’t know who built it, you really have no reason to trust it.
oh, and, LOL at Vergina.
Where is the car located?
it would help you significantly if someone would be able to check it out
you dont need someone who is great with dsms
But you yourself can check a few things on the car
See if there is sometype of tuning equipment (AFC, DSMLink Cable, Standalone, etc)
Check for the obv rust spots, apparently these model cars rust on the strut tires
if it’s an AWD car, if the rear end whines while you are coasting to a slower speed
You can tell right away if it’s an aftermarket clutch
Shaftplay on the “upgraded” turbo
if the injectors are stock (stock ones will have blue tops)
if it’s a greddy cast manifold it should have greddy somewheres on it
the turbo should say MHI somewheres, along with part #, greddy kits are MHI, its prob an 18g, or 20g
exhaust
check stupid shit like windows, locks, if the moonroof leaks, or rear hatch
be able to START the car, check the oil level, air filter… it will prob tick for a bit
go for some sort of test drive around the block, if it’s dumping fuel, whatever
there’s a whole bunch of shit to check with a modified car. it really all depends on the price of his car, and your car. Get a compression test, etc
I would just say pass because the guy doesnt know anything so that doesnt help you decide and if you can not look at the car and tell what parts they are i would suggest you dont buy.
Im going with a no on that car. Plus you can find many nice AWD 2gb dsm’s for around that price. dsmtuners.com - check it out
You can by Ted’s aka Nikeman’s GS-T for 9k. Pass on this one especially since he’s rolling on 15’s. Pretty small wheel for a DSM. How can you even consider buying a car when you don’t know what is done to it or if it even runs since it has been sitting.
Check out www.mitsu-marketplace.com for cars also.
Take a pass. Don’t get yourself into that kind of situation. You don’t want the headaches and frustration.
No way would I buy a car that was supposedly rebuilt but they have no proof of it. Sounds like a ticking time bomb.
Pass.
$7K in parts but he doesn’t know what kind?!?! Are you kidding me???
Sounds like he got screwed and is trying to recover his loss at your expense.
I’ll play devil’s advocate here and say go check out the car in question. Can’t hurt, worst that happens is you call off the deal.
You should be able to talk him down to a more even trade- but at least go look at the car, take pics, research it a bit, figure out whats going on with the car. I only say this because your screen name is synonymous with trying to get rid of that 3000GT SL, and this could be (but most likely isn’t, not to get your hopes up too high) an opportunity to trade.
if the guy doesnt know anything about the car then you can jew him down a lot. maybe get him to trade straight up?
This made me LOL.
On a helpful note though, when you say it was rebuilt, do you mean engine rebuild? Or was the car totaled and now has a salvage/rebuilt title?
:bloated:
Pass on this. Sounds like another backyard project gone south.
This. I used to think, way back when, that people that spend thousands on cars could not remember what they put into it as the list becomes so vast…but it is truly hard to forget the work you do if you take the time to go over it in your head.
I would walk away before you are out way more than you gain.
