Picked up a side project, a mint shell '98 Eclipse RS, 420A turbo

This was for sale on roclife, and it was a good deal, so I bought it as a little winter project. Not much was known about the car, other than the fact that the compression test is fine, but the leakdown is bad on cylinder 4, but I have since found out a bunch of info. The car does drive nicely though, and sounds bad ass with the cams in it!

First off, here are some pics:

Two owners ago, the car was turbo’d by Rick (Bald Turbo Freak). I contacted him, and found out a lot about the car. Anything he didn’t know, I was able to look up parts and find out what all the car had. Here is a breakdown of what it has as it currently sits:

Engine:

  • BC 272 cams

  • Bald Turbo Freak ported head

  • AEM Tru Time adjustable cam gears(-2 degree exhaust, -4 degree intake)

  • Unorthodox Racing Underdrive Crank Pulley

    Transmission:

  • B&M short throw shifter

    Turbo:

  • Garrett GT3071R-WG, internally gated turbo

  • Godspeed front mount intercooler

  • Bald Turbo Freak intercooler piping

  • Bald Turbo Freak cold air intake

  • Blitz blow off valve

  • Bald Turbo Freak ported intake manifold

  • Bald Turbo Freak ported, cast log exhaust manifold with T3 adapter

  • Bald Turbo Freak 3" downpipe and turboback exhaust

    Electronics:

  • Innovate LC-1 wideband sensor

  • MS1 megasquirt piggyback

    Wheels/Tires:

  • V6 Mustang wheels with 205/65/15 Hakka 2 snow tires

  • Tenzo wheels and tires

    Suspension:

  • Tokico shocks with some orange lowering springs

    Body:

  • VIS carbon fiber hood

The car is 100% rust free, and even the rubber under the hood is in perfect condition. Here is a shot of the engine bay (I have no clue why the 30R is blue).

My goal is to fix it up as nice as I can, and then either sell it as a whole, or part it out for the best profit. It could be a replacement for the SRT if I got it nice enough, but I think it will most likely just be a project / investment.

Should be fun to mess with, and it’s certainly nice not messing with a rusty pile!

Cool, you must have gotten a good deal…

Those six-banger wheels look a helluva lot better on a 2G than they did on the Mustang they came off of. Nice car.

that seems like a lotte piping under that hood

Charge piping is actually shorter than an Evo, but it also has the cold air intake, which is probably why you think it looks like a lot of piping.

I know nothing about Eclipses other then the fact that I can’t fit in them. Is this one AWD?

Nope, the 4g63 models were mostly AWD, but none of the 420A models were.

I had one of those! So slow!

Very slow haha.

I’m not big on the 420a 2g’s but this one looks good. Nice pickup!

That’s what the GT3071R-WG is for my friend.

On that note though, I started pulling everything off of the car. Yesterday I pulled the megasquirt and LC-1 wideband, and today I pulled the front bumper (I have a new, undamaged one), the FMIC, charge piping, and the turbo. Busy busy!

The good news with the wiring is that since the Megasquirt 1 v 3.0 is just a piggyback in this case, I only have to resolder 6 wires, and the car will run on the stock PCM again.

Next step, I need to find a stock exhaust manifold and and get this puppy to run again, n/a!

Why did you make it N/A again?

I have 2 turbo cars, one of them is a drag car, and there is more money to be made by parting the car out and making it stock than by keeping it turbo.

Made some progress on this guy in my spare time. I have completely re-wired the engine harness to work with the stock PCM again, so it is as if the Megasquirt was never hooked up. Everything should pass emissions now, and run like stock (other than the cams making it lope some). I replaced the beat up bumper with a brand new, freshly sprayed bumper, restored the interior, and removed the turbo manifold in prep for the new N/A exhaust. I couldn’t find any stock parts that were not destroyed, so I just went and got an eBay header for the car. I did some research on the N/A eclipse forums, and these headers are actually pretty decent. Fitment is good, and they don’t crack right away. I don’t care about power gains, I just want something that will get the exhaust out the back, so it should do great!

It was $60.99 shipped to my door, with everything you see. Once I get it installed, I will have Cory or someone weld up the current exhaust to this, and it should be just about ready to fire up.

Mark, are you looking to move this once done? If so, what would you be looking to get for it? PM if necessary…

Yes, and PM’d
