What did I buy?
2000 Lexus GS300
Why?
Biggest reason was because of my son. I needed a 4dr car that would have enough space to haul the family around and carry a decent amount of stuff AND have fun when I wanted to. I was in search of the perfect car. Firstly, I bought a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT because it was 4dr, awd turbo but was REALLY small and pretty bad on gas. I sold that and found a 2005 Nissan Altima SE-R. It was great because it was BIG, but FWD fail leaded me to sell it after a few months. Then I found the Lexus GS300. Perfect 4dr, rwd and plenty of space. Another big reason was that I could easily do a 2JZ-GTE swap almost as easy as putting an SR20DET into a s-chassis. Although automatic, I had to make some type of sacrifice. Very driftable in the winter and in wet, but needs the motorswap to have some REAL fun.
Another big reason in going with this car is I wanted to have a car that could be STANCED and the VIP scene looked like a good place to start. VIP + Sport is what I was aiming for.
My next car will be a 2007+ BMW 335i in the next couple years. Drove one and it was AMAZING.
4dr, RWD, Twin Turbo, awesome handling 4dr sedan out there and very easy to tune and reach 400-450 reliably.
What do you miss about your S Chassis?Drifting. Another big thing that complimented drifting with my s14 was the cheap available OEM and aftermarket support available. If I broke something, 99% chance the part I needed would be available on SON240sx or on the net. Cheap, fast and fun would sum up a s-chassis. Definitely happy it was my first real car that I began to mod and also get into the fitment scene.
Will you be back?
I would love to say yes, but at this moment in time for the next few years I don’t see that happening. If I did, it would be a weekend warrior.
your car looks so much better in person samson
^ i was hoping to see it instead of the minivan
Same, I got the minivan.
4 door M3 dude… everything is better than the 335i, particularly the lack of tubo-unreliability. By the time you and I are able to buy new cars they’ll be in the $30k range… i hope
Sorry guys, the Lexus would have trouble fitting all the rims in the back with car seats lol
@ Bing, I’d rather get a 335i a year or so down the road as they are pretty cheap even right now. 20-25k range.
A 4dr M3 would cost almost double the price…
335 is way more fun.
M3 takes a mission to get going, when it does, watch out
Dinan s2 package
voila 450whp
cheque please.
you guys dont know what your missing until you try a 450rwhp 135i or 1m
Im pretty sure thats daddy’s money
Ya, I’ve heard the M3s take a while to get going from a dig as well.
But who cares about high speed, the wangan days are over. 50km/hr over and my car gets impounded anyways.
This year I sold my S13, It was my first car, but thought it was time to move on. I finished school, worked a bit and thought it was a good time to trade up
Picked a 93 GTS-T from a good friend Mark as he was moving out west.
Came pretty much stock, 143xxx kms
1.5 nismo diff
Greddy/ Trust boost controller.
Greddy Boost Gauge.
Kei Office Coilovers.
Nismo Wheels
and some other little Things
First picture, Also the worst picture ever haha.
Heres the most recent pic
Its quite a step up from the S13, just more comfy, better on the highway and feel solid on the track. Im not too sure if id get another s13,
I really do like hunting for unique parts for my skyline, to me its half the fun finding stuff that no one else has or that is hard to come by. While it
still is a 20 year old japanese car, Its got a half the KMS of my 240 had, and Zero Rust. I can see my self having R32s for a while now
non GTR skylines are worse than proper 240sx’s in basically every single way.
harder to get parts, rhd hassles (insurance, blind spots, etc.), RB20/25’s, etc. etc.
On the 335 /135 issue… the BMW TT motor has a laundry list of reliability issues. you’ll be blowing thousands chasing down problems.
It’s the same as the SR / LSX debate to some degree. All the pitfalls of boost in the 335/135 and all teh awesomeness of the V8 in the M3. Moreover, the M3 chassis and suspension is more wickeder.
It’s not like you’re going to keep it stock anyways and who cars about 0-60 in stock trim. Either upgrade it or stop caring about it.
M3 Sedans are in the $4X’s in the US right now.
M3 sedans would be double the price of a 335i…so if anything I could just buy a whole new one if I wanted or put aside the price difference towards maintenance and replacement of any drivetrain problems down the road.
In terms of suspension, iirc they are interchangeable so not a huge motivation factor there.
samson hold onto the GS! no m3s; save up for a c63!
Many parts are compatible with other Nissan cars of the same era. I searched High and low for a rust free shell to swap my parts over too but every “mint” 240 was rotten.
Driving RHD is pretty easy, you like everything else you get used to it. My insurance is $5 more than my S13. My RB is great on gas with my only complaint being the turbo that is made of glass. I do go to the occasional Drift Day so the GTS is more fitting.
GTR s are waay more expensive in every way, Gas, Maintenance, insurance. I havent heard of many RB26’s that haven’t shat the bed without dumping Thousands of dollars into. after all they come with TWO glass turbos, not one not to mention oil starvation issues and the likes.
Your Argument, Good Sir, is Flawed
^^ total sense.
I’ve never had a problem getting parts on my rb20
What did I buy?
A 1998 BMW 328i (E36).
Why?
I’d still be driving my S14 today if it hadn’t be stolen off my driveway by some dickwad. I replaced it with a Corolla “beater” which I drove for a year before it met it’s demise at Mosport.
I would have loved to get another s-chassis but the reality is, with me being able to only have one car (no room in the garage to store a 240 during the winter), I need something that I can drive year round, and heavily modding a car that you’re going to drive through winter is a pretty poor investment. I also wanted to get something that I wouldn’t be super tempted to mod, and that would be pretty good out of the box (kinda like Cal, I wanted to stop spending money on cars for the time being).
I had actually tried to find another beater like the Corolla I had, but time was running out and I found a sweet deal on an E36, everything lined up (mint condition, previous owner had the car for 10 years, dealer maintained, etc.).
Since I was spending more than I’d spend for a beater, the car had to have some future potential IF I decided to spend money on the car. With the E36’s, there’s tons of room for growth, as the chassis is excellent, and the motor/tranny are strong (at least from what I’ve heard so far).
I did take the car to the track recently, and as you can see in the photo, the body roll was absurd. Can’t really complain for a car with stock (non-sport) suspension, but street driving led me to believe it would have performed a bit better at the track.
What do you miss about your S Chassis?
I miss the car, the culture, the community, the classic Japanese looks, the handling, the nimbleness, and in the case of my Kouki, the rarity. I’ve never owned a car for looks or for the fact that it was rare, but it was a cool feeling.
I miss seeing another S-chassis on the street and the little honks and waves you’d give to each other. Sometimes I wave at other 240’s, but they’re probably like “who the fuck is this dick in the bimmer waving at me?”.
I had an S13 for about 3 weeks before I had my S14, so I definitely miss the power of the SR, although since my S14 had only a KA, I’m liking the increase in power in my 328.
My plans for the S14 were to slowly build it into a drift car, and I had almost everything in place, multi-link and new tie-rods about to go on (then it was stolen). This summer I was going to do the SR swap, and I’d be well on my way.
Of course I can turn the E36 into a drift car, but there just something about the S-chassis that makes more sense for this.
Oh yeah, and simple shit doesn’t break like the clock! My clock just went on my BMW after 2 weeks of owning it lol. And there’s 700 gadgets in there that CAN break, whereas the 240 kept things simple.
What do you NOT miss about your S Chassis? (I’ve added a new question)
I love that my BMW feels solid in every way. The shifter is precise, the car feels planted at high speeds, and just in general everything feels well built.
What I like is how good the car feels out of the box, for basically the same price I paid for my completely stock '97 S14 that I bought a few years ago. It’s faster, it’s nicer inside, it sounds good, has a better stereo, etc. It might even handle better, or on par with a stock S14.
I love the fact that I have heated seats and some other creature comforts, as I’ll be driving this thing year round. It’s my first car that has keyless entry. The windows are all auto-down! And the front 2 are auto-up! These little things are a real pleasure for the everyday commute to work, and on long drives.
Will you be back?
Fuck yes! As soon as I have room to own 2 cars, I’ll be picking up another S13/S14, or perhaps an S15 if it’s not for a couple more years. Might consider getting a GTS-T as well, but definitely another RWD '90’s Japanese car.
In the meantime, I’m trying to hold off putting coilovers, wheels, tires, exhaust, intake, and a chip on the E36 – with these simple bolt-ons I’d have a quick, great handling and sounding car.
