project: orange wheels for my audi

My mom’s Hyundai came factory with orange wheels…

On white it should look ok. Hunter safety orange, I’d drive with this hat on 24/7.

It rained yesterday so I didn’t paint due to the humidity. I plan to shoot them Wednesday weather permitting. I’m also thinking of grabbing some aircraft remover and stripping the faces completely, so that might slow me down.

I didn’t say they were good replicas

I know you’re trying to keep it cheap, but I have had bad luck with clear coat in a spray can even in applications significantly less demanding than a wheel…

Buy some 2 part clear and put it on with an HVLP gun and actually have it look nice for longer than a week.

That’s because they sucked. That was the best day ever for that car when Mark got rid of that garbage.

On a side-note I am interesting to see how this project comes out.

filler shouldnt be necessary for sad scratches. a good filler primer will hide 150grit

what happened to the clear? did it fail to bond?

+1. ive shot high build primer over body work that i only took to 120grit and after letting it sit and sanding for basecoat, you couldnt even see anything. turned out great and still looks good a few years later.

update time.

I decided to back up and strip the wheel with aircraft stripper which turned out to be the worst idea ever, I basically ruined the wheels. You simply can’t use this stuff below 70 degrees out. I had my garage in the low 60s and it just wouldn’t strip the paint. It just made a rubbery mess even after trying 2-3 times. The weather is getting too cold so had to give up and make sure I could spray today so I spent yesterday using a paint removing wheel on a drill and stripped the wheels down as best I could. I then sanded and primed and sanded.

here they are at the worst:

after priming and sanding some more:

and here we go with some paint (I’ll be putting down a few more coats) and then the satin clear.

good enough, but sadly I’m disappointed with myself.

Heat gun does wonders with stripper and i found it easier and faster to rinse the old paint off with a hose or pressure washer. On a side note the fumes get pretty bad when you put heat on it lol.

Oh and from the pics it looks good!

They look good in the pics. Why the disappointment?

:word: ???

i ran the exact same color last winter

Can’t wait to see them on the car, white and orange should really pop!

looking good. should look nice on the car.

after looking at them again today with the satin clear I like them a bit more. I guess I’m beating myself up because I put 20 hours into these and they would have looked better if I only did 4-5.

Live and learn, live and learn.

Live and learn. There are many projects I’ve spent entirely too long on. In for pictures on the car!

Yeah, I tried stripping a fender chemically a few years back. I set it outside on saw horses and let the stripper go to work… but it just turned the paint (like three layers of it, plus filler) into a big pile of gooey snot. I used a pressure washer and a 15-degree nozzle to chisel it off, but it took hours of spraying and reapplying to get it clean.

End result looks good though. I think those’ll look pretty sharp on the car.

Lifeline tires in Rochester hooked me up with great work at a great price. Check them out if you’re local.

and here is my quick driveway photoshoot, I think they look great.
