The New England Patriots’ clinching of a perfect season with a Saturday night win over the New York Giants was seen by an estimated 34.5 million people, according to Nielsen Media Research.
That was 9 million more than any prime-time entertainment show this season. It’s also, according to Nielsen’s records, the second most-watched National Football League regular season game in at least 20 years. Only a 1990 contest between the Giants and San Francisco 49ers did better.
The game wasn’t a windfall for any one particular network, however. Both CBS and NBC aired a simulcast of the NFL Network telecast, along with local stations in New York and the Boston area.
