It’ll be way less than 50k to turn a 1 car into a 2 but keep in mind, if you do a 3+ car garage, you’ll never get your money back when you sell the house. Very few buyers WANT more garage space. Big garages are like swimming pools - they devalue the house for most people but there are a select few that really want them.

Two ways around that.

1. Make it a steel construction and disassemble upon future resale.
2. Make it a two story, or at least habitable (space wise) quarters above the garage space for storage or else.

Swimming pools devalue the property typically? Interesting.

And it’s not exactly turning a 1 car into two, it’s turning a two into over-sized 4, tall enough for a lift and habitable quarters above.

theres a house that just went up for sale here in latham right past on rt2 the cicrle heading towards watervliet, its got a basement, its brick, single floor, garage connected within the house and a detatched 2 car garage in the backyard. really nice place. i drive by it all the time if you want i can get the phone number. the seller is Assist 2 sell iirc.

Price tag is quite a bit more then I can afford, otherwise not too bad.

My selling point at the moment, is the fact that there are very few decent properties within my price range to begin with. Once you factor in the location, taxes and detached two car with possible room for expansion; pickings are slim.
