Jurisdictions may restrict the powers granted to those who have “peace officer status” as opposed to “police status”. For example, in New York State all New York State Court Officers as well as Court Clerks assigned to the 1st and 2nd Judicial Departments are classified as Peace Officers. They may execute bench warrants but are not allowed to execute arrest warrants.
BMHA, State Park Police, Campus Public Saftey officers, metro cops, Correctional officers, Gamies, Parol officers, officers of the courst and a few others are peace officers.
For the purposes of this section a peace officer acts pursuant to
his special duties when he performs the duties of his office, pursuant
to the specialized nature of his particular employment, whereby he is
required or authorized to enforce any general, special or local law or
charter, rule, regulation, judgment or order.
A peace officer, whether or not acting pursuant to his special
duties, who lawfully exercises any of the powers conferred upon him
pursuant to this section, shall be deemed to be acting within the scope
of his public employment for purposes of defense and indemnification
rights and benefits that he may be otherwise entitled to under the
provisions of section fifty-k of the general municipal law, section
seventeen or eighteen of the public officers law, or any other
applicable section of law.
I am a Peace Officer, as I am with the Fire Police. To my knowlege I can not do anything outside the fire scene. I know I can arrest/detain people if I feel it is needed, and have tickets issued if I report the violation and license plate to a cop. Other than that and like…traffic control…I dunno what else I can do lol.
