Can University Police hand out tickets on city streets? I didn’t really think they could pull you over on city streets until last night, at about 4AM I got pulled over by one of those rent-a-cop’s who thought they were a real cop or something.
I was heading down sweethome to drop my buddy off, passed UB and saw a University Police cruiser, and didn’t think much of it. Next thing I know as I turn down Chestnut Ridge the fucker puts her lights on and pulls me over for my tints. She asked me the routine “where are you coming from?” and “have you had anything to drink?” questions, and then busts out “have you been smoking any illegal drugs?” I replied with no and she asked me to take off my glasses and shined her flashlight into my eyes. Then she made some comments on my spider-man pajama pants. What do you know, Ms. Detective failed to notice that my inspection was WAY overdue.
So I got out of the ticket because my buddy gave her some card with a cops name on it, but my question is, if I didn’t have this card, could she actually write me a real ticket?
actually, most university police officers have gone through state trooper training, so yes…they can pull you over outside of campus if your on certain streets such as the ones connecting the campuses and surrounding things like UB’s medical bookstore…anything owned/opperated by the school
Yes but the point is, if you get a ticket from campus police it only holds weight if you are enrolled in school and doesn’t translate to your NYS driving record. If you went to Buff state, however, those kinds of tickets DID go on your NYS driving record as the campus police could follow you outside of school grounds and give you the appropriate ticket. That at least was the way it was when I was at Fredonia state, the campus cops had now power past the school borders.
I got a ticket yrs ago at Buff State for blowing a stop sign by a campus cop. I thought it would be a joke, and I would just get out of it. It was a real ticket and I could not get out of it because it was through buffalo court where they dont plea down. On top of it my neighbor at the time was a buffalo cop and could not get me out of it because it was given by university police and not BPD.
Also as a UB alumni, i feel qualfied to tell you that being UB alumni does not qualify you to point out your UB alumni status, nor does it qualify you to be any sort of expert on this, or any, situation.
