Raptor 660R Cleanup/Maintenance/Mod Thread

just wanted to have one consolidated thread where i could update all my mods/maintenance/pics/videos in one place.

i do take GoPro videos every time i ride but the file sizes are huge (1080p) so it’s somewhat tough to edit them, and then host them somewhere.

traded the 400EX for a 01 Raptor 660R. needed moar powahhhhh so this should suffice for now.

just got it delivered on 7/11/11. will need a good wash and oil change.

came with a full header and slip on Yoshimura system, new tires, brakes have 75% life left, new starter, starter bearing, flywheel, battery. K&N filter, new carbs, rebuilt top end (by a local well respected powersports shop).

it has reverse, which the 400EX didn’t. this was a huge plus.

shitty pics the kid sent me.

it came with headlights, but they are not installed. i will buff them up nicely and put them on next time i go out there.

onto the restoration of the headlights.

i didn’t want to get too crazy with the headlight restoration because i knew they’d be beat up anyways, but I wanted to at least restore some of the clarity of the lenses.

just some standard rubbing compound, elbow grease, and The Scorpions playing through the headphones

i apologize for the shitty pics, they were taken with a Droid1.

left one is about half done, right one is still cloudy

onto my first full day of riding this sucker!~

i needed to grab a new throttle cable from the dealer to work with the thumb type throttle…so i hit the dealership early on Saturday morning, and saw this cool lil guy, maybe for mishka  (this is my girlfriend’s nickname, her name is melissa). i realize it’s a kid’s quad, but the riding gear was cool for a girl!

i had to go so early that morning because i was going here all day and wouldn’t have made it before they closed.

so i installed all my shit and rode a good portion of the day. some better pics after blowing everything down with compressed air, and a wash:

awesome tires:

one of my favorite parts of the styling:

update: went riding for the first time on it yesterday. big difference from the 400EX, way more power.

was able to put about 10 quad lengths on my buddys DS650 in the airstrip that we drag race on. both from a dig and a 2nd gear roll (to avoid suicidal wheelies)

didn’t get to jump it much, because as i was coming up a hill to jump it for the first time…

the chain exploded and wrapped itself around the front sprocket.

so that ended my day pretty prematurely. did get a good 3-4 hours of riding time in though.

did a bit of research and found out why there was oil leaking from the front sprocket shaft. apparently the seal in there likes to go bad when debris works its way in. upon inspection also found that the o-ring inside there was ripped.

Parts ordered as of this morning:

Front sprocket Oil Seal
Front sprocket o-ring
billet aluminum case saver
92 link DID O-Ring chain
12 tooth (geared down) front sprocket (old stock one was pretty worn)

can’t wait to get back out there roughly Thursday and work on it. hopefully the parts get there by then. not riding this weekend due to a Brad Paisley concert on Saturday, and then helping the girlfriend move on Sunday. we’ll see. excited to see how much easier wheeliebops are with the geared down sprocket.

and after a great relaxing day of riding and wrenching:

where do you ride?

Java NY, on my friend’s parents’ land.

from what i’ve seen it’s tough to ride legally around Buffalo unless you know someone willing to let you ride on their land.

not to far from me, I usually ride around my farm and what not. either on the grizzley or raptor. The grizzley is like a caddy ssooooo comfortable.

cool. my friend’s DS650 (the goofy looking orange and black one) is like a Cadillac too, just SO big and so comfy. he finds it fun to ride fast, but he’s a big guy (220 lbs, 6’) whereas i’m only 5’8", and it’s challenging for me to throw around a huge machine so easily like he does (it weighs over 500lbs wet).

Nice. I haven’t been out riding at all yet this year. :frowning:
I got a chassis skid plate for a 660 if your interested though.

really? might be interested in that. PM me some pics/info, and what you want for it.

got anything else kicking around?

Check the rear end bearings, rear brakes go to shit fast, get nerf bars & skid plates, install a horn (best trail mod EVAR).

Sold mine 3-4 years ago

checked the rear brakes, they are good. bearings seem ok too.

i can’t get used to the idea of nerf bars…they just seem so bulky…i understand they’ll stop my foot from being torn off, but it’s tough to wrap my head around the idea of them being there.

hmmmm…horn might be next project…

The last DS I rode was bored n stroked on c12. It was stupid. Let me know if you want to ride sometime. or if you need a hand. I went to school for this stuff sadly.

just buy a set or two of rear pads, after a wet/muddy ride they are going to be toast. The fronts never wear since they are protected by the wheels.

It’s sooo weird riding a quad without nerf bars once you get used to it. saved my ass a bunch of times, oh, and get riding boots.

I loooooved my horn, especially since I tend to ride pretty fast (like at majestic, for example) and people need to gtfo of my way.

Plan on selling this to get a dirt bike after a season or two, haha.

C12

it’d be cool to ride together…but i has no truck or trailer

details on Majestic? i have read/heard about it but never really looked into it. again i have no way of moving my quad around so i’m limited to my buddy’s land (which is still very very very good, for me at least).

and as far as the dirtbike…i have enough trouble being safe with 4 wheels, i don’t need a faster death sentence, haha. although it’d be fun to ride one at least once in my life…

I was the same way man, you’ll get there in a few years.

Invest $500 in a hitch and HF trailer… majestic is pretty sweet, you can camp there and everything. Outside of bradford PA. http://majestictrails.com/

eh…i think towing capacity on my econobox is 1000lbs…i don’t think that’s really up to the task

but maybe in the future if i pick up something bigger (like some wagon with a bigger motor, i’ve always wanted one of those) i can definitely throw it on.

raptor+ trailer will not weigh more than 1000lbs.

Since my buddy with the 650 has let me ride on his land for the whole season so far i would feel obligated to bring him along. 650+raptor+trailer=overwhelmed sentra

How much did you pick this up for?
I want to hopefully get a Z400 or raptor(or yz450f if i can afford one) after this winter, i miss riding so much. I also would much rather have a quad than a dirtbike, so much more versatile , and trail/mud riding is a lot more fun

I miss my 01 raptor, but I did go through two transmissions. They suck for the 01’s. Look out if it hasnt been replaced, IT WILL need to be.

Also get an exhaust and jet kit, it makes a big differance, and sounds awesome.

i traded my 01 400EX for this (straight up). the kid wanted to get back into a 400EX and i included a lot of new parts. so, let’s say, $2000 or less? i bought the 400EX in April for 1350 and put about $400 worth of parts into it.

already has had 2nd gear replaced/tranny rebuilt
already has Yoshi header/slip on
already jetted

yeah it does sound awesome. way louder than the 400EX was.

i was gonna say man a straight up trade, you got a great fuckin deal
